Week 8 - Challenge 1 - Draft Analysis on a Fan Cover
DRAFT ANALYSIS OF FAN COVER
DRAFT ANGLE IN PLASTIC:
Draft is the providing angle or tapers on product feature such as walls, ribs, posts and bosses that lie parallel to the direction of release from thmold eases part ejection.
for doing the draft analysis, a tooling direction is required.
DRAFT ANALYSIS TOOL IN PLASTICS:
By using draft analysis tool, it identifies the zone (using color code) and highlights the areawhich deviates from the specified values along a defined draft direction.
PROCEDURE FOR DRAFT ANALYSIS:
1. Set the costomised rendered style
2. Select the draft analysis tool
3. Adjust the draft direction to molding axis using compass
4. Observe color range
Green color for draft angle less than 3 degrees
Red color for draft angle less than 0 degrees
Blur color for draft angle 0 to 3 degrees.
- 3 degrees is for nominal draft
- 0.5 degrees can be manufactured at ribs
- 7 degrees for textured faces
Steps involved to find draft analysis on given Fan cover:
1. Create a Dummy Tooling axis along z-axis. Because by observing the part model, z-axis is the best possible draft angle.

2. Create a tooling direction along x-direction.
Intersect the boundry curve on mid plane along x-direction and draw two lines. bisect the line with other two lines are drawn. the bisecting line is stated as tooling direction along x-direction

3. create tooling direction along y direction:
Intersect the boundry curve on mid plane along Y-direction and draw two lines. bisect the line with other two lines are drawn. the bisecting line is stated as tooling direction along Y-direction

4. Tooling direction for Fan Cover:
The bisecting line is the final tooling direction for tooling directio along x-direction and tooling direction along y-direction.

5. Draft analysis by using tooling axis.
NOTE: Minimum draft angle is 3 degrees.

CONCLUSION:
Draft analysis on a fan cover using CATIA is done and 3 degrees is the good draft angle
