Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate
OBJECTIVE:- To analyze the simulation of a sphere pressing a plate for the given material and find the required output in ANSYS.
PROCEDURE:-
- Open Ansys Workbench and choose static structural.
- In the Engineering data, let the material be structural steel and also choose Structural Steel non-linear from General non-linear material with default values.

- For the geometry, right-click and import the given "Wire Sphere_pressing on plate.STEP" and open with space claim.

- Now in the workbench goto Model -> Edit, in the model window check the Geometry for the material and assign Structural Steel to the sphere and Structural steel non-linear to the plate.

- For contacts, delete all existing contacts create manual contact and choose Sphere face as contact and plate upper face as a target, type= Frictional, friction coefficient= 0.74 (the friction coefficient is obtained from "https://roymech.org/Useful_Tables/Tribology/co_of_frict.html").

- For mesh, use the default option to generate the mesh.

- For analysis setting, the number of steps= 4, solver type= direct, large deflection= on.

- Apply the fix support to the bottom of the plate surface and displacement to the upper sphere surface up to 4mm along the y-axis in tabular data and also retract back the sphere.

- As the sphere part is one of the part of a complete sphere which is symmetric in nature, a symmetry region is added to the face of the sphere one along the z-axis and other along the x-axis by clicking on Model-> Prepare -> Symmetry ->Symmetry region.

- In the solution request select for the required output like directional deformation along the y-axis, Equivalent elastic strain on the sphere, Equivalent stress and Equivalent elastic strain on the plate. Click on solve to generate the result.

RESULT:-
Directional deformation along the y-axis

Equivalent elastic strain on the sphere

Equivalent stress on the plate

Equivalent elastic strain on the plate

| Directional deformation along the y-axis (mm) | Equivalent elastic strain on the sphere (mm/mm) | Equivalent stress on the plate (MPa) | Equivalent elastic strain on the plate (mm/mm) | |
| Minimum | -3.3799 | 4.6098e-008 | 35.62 | 4.4822e-004 |
| Maximum | 0.32908 | 8.4809e-006 | 3295.5 | 1.6482e-002 |
| Average | -0.19107 | 4.4984e-007 | 903.54 | 4.5965e-003 |
It can be observed from the analysis and the table that the plate having material as structural steel non-linear has experienced a huge maximum equivalent elastic strain of about 1.6482e-002 mm/mm in comparison to the sphere having structural steel as the material which has experienced the maximum equivalent elastic strain of about 8.4809e-006 mm/mm also the maximum stress experienced by the plate is 3295.5 MPa.
CONCLUSION:-
So from the analysis, it can be inferred that the plate having material as structural steel non-linear has undergone plastic deformation when a sphere having structural steel as the material is pressed on it for about 4mm.
