Project

To create different types of 1D elements with given cross-section and DoF

Objective:- Create 1D elements on the following component with given cross-section and DoF

Specification:-

a. Rod element:- with only translational DOF and RBE2 link

Cross-Section: BOX- Dimension a= 12 mm, Dimension b=10 mm, Thickness t= 0.75 mm

b. Beam element:- with all DOF and RBE3 link

Cross-Section: I Section- Dimension a= 8 mm, Dimension b= 10 mm, Dimension c= 8.5 mm, Thickness t1= 0.75 mm, Thickness t2= 0.6 mm, Thickness t3= 0.6 mm

c. Bar element:- with only x and y DOFs With RBE3 link

Cross-section: CROSS Section- Dimension DIM1= 5 mm, Thickness DIM2= 1.2 mm, Dimension DIM3= 10 mm, Thickness DIM4= 1.2mm

d. & e. apply the mass of magnitude 10 with RBE2 link

f. Join the two components with Spring elements

Procedure:-

  • As the file type is "IGES", open "Import Solver Deck" select "Import Geometry" in tab-bar, open the file and click on "Import".
  • Goto "Geom" open "midsurface" select the 1st bracket and click on "extract".
  • To create midsurface for the 2nd bracket, first, create a new component in the tab-bar then extract midsurface for the 2nd bracket.
  • In the toolbar select "Delete" change it to "Solid", right-click on it and select "displayed" and click on "delete entity".
  • In the tab-bar delete the solid components, so that only the mid surface only remains.
  • Now in the "Tool" goto "Organize" under "Collectors" select "surface" and choose the 2nd bracket so that the middle surface will move to the newly created component in the tab-bar, in this way the 2 brackets will have separate meshing.
  • In the tab-bar right-click goto create select material and name it, now create 2 properties in the tab-bar name it, assign the material and for 1st property provide thickness 1 and for 2nd 2. Now under "component" assign the properties created to both the middle surface.
  • Before creating a mesh in 2D, provide washer split to the hole, goto "Geom" under "quick edit" select "line" of "washer split" give offset value of 5 and select the boundary of holes.
  • Now go to "automesh" under 2D select "surface", right-click "displayed", element size 5 and mesh type to "mixed" then click on "mesh". If the node on the hole boundary is different then make it even by right-click to decrease and left-click to increase nodes.
  • Now go to "Hyperbeam" under "1D", select "standard section" than standard section library= Hyperbeam and standard section type= thin-walled box, click create. In the dimension provide a= 12mm, b= 10mm and t= 0.75mm.
  • Now right-click for "Create" goto "Standard Section" and under "HyperMesh" select "Standard I section" provide the dimension a= 8 mm, b= 10 mm, c= 8.5 mm, t1= 0.75 mm, t2= 0.6 mm, t3= 0.6 mm.
  • Again "Create" goto "Standard Section" and under "OptiStruct" choose "Cross" provide the dimension DIM1= 5 mm, DIM2= 1.2 mm, DIM3= 10 mm, DIM4= 1.2mm

a) To create rod element with only translational DOF and RBE2 link at point "a", first create RBE2 links, "rigids" under "1D" and select "create" change the "dependent" to "multiple nodes" and "independent" to "calculate node", select the nodes around "a" to create RBE2 link, as to provide translation DoF uncheck the dof1, dof2, and dof3 and click on create, repeat for hole "a" of the other bracket. Now in tab-bar, right-click goto create and select "property" name it as "rod", change card image= PROD and beamsec= Rod. To create rod, goto "rods" under "1D" and select the mid nodes of point "a" also change the element type= CROD and select property= Rod.

b) To create beam element with all DOF and RBE3 link at point "b", first create RBE3 links, "RBE3" under "1D" and select the nodes around the hole "b", to provide all DoF check the dof1 to dof6 and click on create, repeat for hole "b" of the other bracket. Now in tab-bar, right-click goto "create" and select "property" name it as "beam", change card image= PBEAM and beamsec= I_Section. To create beam, goto "bars" under "1D" and select the mid nodes of point "b" also change the element type= CBEAM, select property= Beam and provide the orientation and press "tab".

c) To create bar element with only X and Y DOF and RBE3 link at point "c", first create RBE3 links, "RBE3" under "1D" and select the nodes around the hole "c", to provide X and Y DoF check the dof1, dof2, dof4 and dof5 and click on create, repeat for hole "c" of the other bracket. Now in tab-bar, right-click goto "create" and select "property" name it as "bar", change card image= PBAR and beamsec= cross_section. To create bar, goto "bars" under "1D" and select the mid nodes of point "c" also change the element type= CBAR, select property= Bar and provide the orientation and press "tab".

d and e) To apply the mass of magnitude 10 with RBE2 link at d and e, goto "rigids" under "1D" and select "create" change the "dependent" to "multiple nodes" and "independent" to "calculate node", select the nodes around d and e to create RBE2 link, click on create. to apply mass goto "masses" under "1D" select the node at the mid of RBE2 links created, provide mass= 10, select respective property of the component and element type= CMASS1 and click create. Repeat for other holes at point d and e.

f) Select "Spring" under "1D", select each node of the 2 brackets at point "f", element type= CELAS1, repeat for the other side point "f".

Result:-

Created 1D elements on the following component with given cross-section and DoF

Conclusion:-

By completing the given challenge, I learned how to create midsurface and 1D elements with a given cross-section and DoF in HyperWorks.
