Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

ANSYS WEEK 5- SPHERE PRESSING ON PLATE

AIM

To perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.

OBJECTIVE

To simulate the sphere ball pressing with two material, the plate is assigned to the structural steel non-linear, the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it.

After evaluating results the plastic deformation needs to be captured.

MATERIALS

Structural Steel NL

PROCEDURE

SETUP

The ball press geometry is Imported on the space claim module to check any irregularity tor the geometry damage.

Fig 3: Sphere press

After checking the geometry and updating the model in the workbench the model is been opened in the mechanical module with renaming each part properly.

Fig 4: Renaming each part

Symmetry

Two symmetry region is provided, as the surfaces are perpendicular to each from both sides.

Fig 5: Symmetry region 1

Fig 6: Symmetry Region 2

Contacts

The sphere is contact with the plate to the press is at particular displacement so one contact region is provided, as type frictional contact, with a friction coefficient of 0.74.

Fig 8: Contacts details

Mesh

To get more accuracy in the result, I have tried to refine the mesh in the contact region and the plate. Face sizing 1 and face sizing 2 is added with 0.5mm of the mesh size and the overall mesh for the geometry is with 1mm size. The total number of nodes is 20,699 and elements are 7995.

Analysis Settings.

For this simulation, the 4 steps are provided to evaluate the results with Auto time steeping is to be program-controlled with solver types is direct and as we know it is non-linear problem to identify and deflection the large deflection is ON.

Fig 12: Analysis settings

As we know the bar to press by the ball, so at the time of pressing the bar should be fixed at one point so the fixed support has been provided at the bottom surface of the bar.

Fig 13: Fixed support

The sphere to be press at a particular distance, so the displacement of 4mm is provided by selecting at the top face and the displacement at the opposite Y-axis.

Fig 14: Displacement

The results to be evaluated for directional deformation, Equivalent elastic strain, equivalent stress, and equivalent elastic strain 2 at the sphere.

RESULTS

The results are equivalent for direction deformation to know the deform surface of the sphere, and plasticity of the plate.

Directional Deformation

Equivalent elastic strain 2

Fig 18: Equivalent elastic strain 2

After pressing the plate by 4mm distance by the sphere and preventing back to its portion it shows the plasticity of the structural steel Non-linear material of the plate as this shows in the directional deformation at a max of 0.33mm and equivalent elastic strain is of 0.016828 mm/mm.
