Week 3 - Geometry simplification of an Electronic enclosure assembly

Aim: To import the given power board assembly (CAD body) to Space claim and convert it into ICEPAK body.

Introduction: The power board assembly is consists of several components which are soldered onto the PCB. It is crucial to analyse the flow in the assembly. Hence the CAD object is imported to the space claim and simplified for the analysis in the icepak primitive shapes using the icepak commands. The converted model is to be saved and imported in the icepak. Modifications need to be done in the icepak to define the correct the physics.

Procedure:

1. Download the given model

2. Open Ansys Workbench

3. In component systems, drag the geometry and drop it in the project schematic

4. Similarly place the Icepak and Results in the project schematic

5. create a link between the geometry & icepak setup and solution & results as shown below.

6. Remove the components (fillets, holes, rounds, screws etc.) which doesnot contribute or which are not so important for the analysis. (This helps in reducing the number of cells)

7. Using the split body command, the objects are splitted and the gemoetry is simplified.

8. In the workbench menu, using the command icepak simplify, the CAD objects are converted to icepak primitives depending on the type of geometry and the level of simplification used as shown below.

Note: For rectangular objects, level 0 (bounding box) can be used.

For cylindrical objects, level 1 fit can be used

For other geometries level 2 polygon fit can be used.

For too complex shapes, level 3 CAD object is used. The Facet quality can be adjusted from minimum to maximum depending on the accuracy that is required

9. Alternatively, using the show command in the same menu, the icepak and non-icepak bodies are identified and all the bodies will be converted to icepak bodies.

10. The slots may be converted to grille using the grille option.

11. The project is saved as wbpj file.

12. The model is opened in Icepak and any changes needed should be modified in icepak before going for meshing.
