Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Use the ADVISOR tool and simulate the following

Study-1

For the EV_defaults_in file, if the cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with an FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Steps

• Loaded the Advisor tool from the Matlab command window
• Loaded EV_defaults_in file
• Changed the vehicle cargo mass to 500 kg
• Set a driving cycle named FTP to travel for 45 km
• But one cycle of FTP only covers a distance of 17.77 km, so we set 3 FTP cycles to make the vehicle cover 45 km

the result obtained by simulating the model is shown below;

Inference: It is clear from the ess_soc_hist (Energy storage system of the vehicle/state of charge history) the battery drained out completely when covering around 41.4 km. A warning message also popped up displaying that the 'Requires distance exceeded the vehicle range'. So the Battery pack specification is not able to meet the vehicle requirement which is to travel for 45km. So we have to change the Battery pack specification

Study-2

In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

In the above simulation, the vehicle can only travel a distance of 41.4 km as the battery pack drained completely. In this case, the capacity of the battery pack is 25 kW. So we changed the parameter to 30 kW and repeated the simulation. As shown below;

the result which is obtained from repeating the simulation with the new battery pack specification is shown below;

From the above result, it is clear that the vehicle traveled 49.1 km, that is the vehicle met the requirements with the new battery pack specifications.

Study-3

Perform gradeability test with the PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file Compare your results in a table and conclude.

Steps

• Loaded PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file in Advisor
• Kept the default parameters the same throughout the test
• The Gradeabiltity test performed for a time duration of 10 seconds
• The Gradeability of the vehicle at different speeds range (5-50 mph) is obtained and implemented on an excel sheet

Conclusions

The week 3 challenge is successfully completed by conducting the above studies.

1. Simulated EV_defaults_in file in Advisor, with cargo mass 500 kg with all other default conditions. Made the vehicle travel for 45 km with an FTP drive cycle.

2. During the 1st study the battery pack get drained out, so we changed the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. Performed gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file, Compared results in a table for different speeds.
