Challenge

By using ADVISOR tool in MATLAB, simulating different vehicles and finding out their required performance parameters.

Question :- Use ADVISOR tool and simulate the following,

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Answer:-

1. Open the Advisor tool by typing Advisor in command window. For this has to work matlab folder has to change to Advisor folder where all the advisor database is located.

2. At load file select EV_defaults_in.

3. At the bottom change the cargo mass to 500kg as per the given question. Click on continue.

`

4. In the next window change the drive cycle to FTP "CYC_FTP'. Give minimum of 3-4 drive cycles to use all the battery SOC and to check whether the battery can provide charge for 45km or not.

5. Click Run.

Results and Observations:-

From the results window, it is observed that, for given model with given inputs with FTP drive cycle, the battery reaches to 0 (0%) SOC and can capable of travel 41.4km only.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Answer :- 1. The steps are same as shown in the previous case.

2. Increase the battery capacity by increasing the modules. Here in this case additional 5 battery modules are provided, so the total modules will be 30. The nominal voltage changed to 370V.

3. Keep remaining parameters same as previous case.

4. Run the simulation with new battery module.

Results and Observation :-

By increasing the battery capacity, the range of vehicle is increased to 49.1 km.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Answer :- 1. In the load file option, select the PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Click on continue without making any changes.

2. In the next window, select the drive cycle as anything we want. For this test, CYC_const_65 is used.

3. Check the gradeability test. And change the parameters as shown. The speed can be varied from 10 to 50mph to study the variations in Gradeability.

Greadiability :- The steepness of grade that a motor vehicle is capable of climbing at efficient speed.

4. Run the simulation and tabulate the results of Gradeability for change of speed from 10 mph to 50mph.

Results and Observations :- The sample Gradeability reults for 10mph is shown. In reults window the given input input speed in mph is converted into kmph.

Speed in mph Speed in kmph Gradeability in %
10 16.09 30.3
20 32.18 19.8
30 48.28 14.7
40 64.37 11.7
50 80.46 9.7

From the results, it is observed that increase in speed results in decrease in gradeability. This is because,Torque and Speed are inversley proportional to each other, so the increase in speed results in decrease of torque which then decreases traction force. So, at steep roads the speed must be decreased to take the advantage of torque for climbing.
