Challenge

Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

(1) AIM- Carry out the "EV_defaults_in" file simulation and conclude the results.

OBJECTIVES- If cargo mass is 500Kg, can the vehicle travel for 45Km with the "CYC_FTP" drive cycle?

SOLUTION- Step 1) Open the ADVISOR tool in Matlab and select "EV_defaults_in" as a load file for the vehicle and change cargo mass default value to 500Kg.

Step 2) Now click on the "Continue" button and another GUI will be in front of us. In it change the default drive cycle to "CYC_FTP" from the drop-down menu. Keep all other parameters as same. Here the no. of cycles is 1.

Step 3) After selecting the cycle and no. of the drive cycle, hit the RUN button. All the calculations will be done automatically and the final result window will be opened on the screen.

As per the highlighted area, we see that the distance traveled by the vehicle in 1 drive cycle is 17.8Km and it has used 40% of SOC.

Step 4) Now to test the vehicle till 45Kms we have to run the simulation for 3 drive cycles. (i.e `45/17.8=2.52` but drive cycle should be an integer no., hence `~~3` )

Step 5) After entering the no. of the drive cycle, hit the RUN button. The result will be as follow:-

As per the results, we can say that the distance traveled by the vehicle is 41.4Km, using its 100% of SOC when the entered drive cycle is 3.

CONCLUSION- The maximum distance the vehicle can travel by using its 100% SOC is 41.4Km. So the answer is "No" it cannot travel 45Km due to insufficient battery capacity.

(2) AIM- Repeat the simulation by changing the battery capacity.

SOLUTION- Step 1) Change no. of modules from 25 to 26 and enter no. of drive cycles as 2. Run the simulation and see the results:-

Step 2) No. of the modules in the battery pack are 27 and no. of drive cycle 2

Step 3) No. of the modules in the battery pack are 28 and no. of drive cycle 2

As per the test conducted above for fix 2 no. of the drive cycles and different no. of the module in the battery pack, we can say that the distance remains the same

So, now we check the different no. of modules with 3 no. of drive cycles.

Step 4) No. of the modules in the battery pack are 26 and no. of drive cycle 3

.

Here the distance traveled is 42.7Km by using 100% of SOC.

Step 5) No. of the modules in the battery pack are 27 and no. of drive cycle 3

Here the distance traveled is 44.8Km by using 100% of SOC.

Step 6) No. of the modules in the battery pack are 28 and no. of drive cycle 3

Here the distance traveled is 46.3Km by using 100% of SOC.

CONCLUSION- So from the above results, we say that to cover the distance of 45Km a 28 module battery with 3 drive cycles is required.

3) AIM- Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

OBJECTIVES- Make a table and conclude the result.

SOLUTION- Step-1) Open the mentioned file in the advisor tool and tick the box of gradeability test with "CYC_FTP" cycle and no. of cycles as 3.

Step-2) Now click on the "Grade Options", as highlighted by Green Box in the above image. And a new dialogue box will open up as below:-

The speed enter is 20mph, the duration for 10secs, and all systems are enabled.

Step-3) The result will be

The gradeability at 32.3Kmph is 19.8%.

Step-4) Now changing the speed at 25mph we get the result as:-

The gradeability at 40.2Kmph is 16.5%.

Similarly for 30,35, &40 mph. we get the results as below table for 10sec duration.

Sr.No Speed(mph) Gradeability
1 20 19.8%
2 25 16.5%
3 30 14.7%
4 35 13.0%
5 40 11.7%

Step-5) By changing the duration to 20sec and speed at 20mph.

we get the gradeability at 32.2Kmph is 22.9%.

Similarly for 25, 30, 35, and 40mph for 20sec duration. we get the gradeability as below:-

Sr.No Speed(mph) Gradeability
1 20 22.9%
2 25 19.7%
3 30 17.7%
4 35 16.0%
5 40 14.6%

CONCLUSION- By observing both tables, we say that as the speed increases the gradeability decreases for both 10sec and 20sec duration.
