Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

AIM:

To Use ADVISOR tool and simulate the following

1. To conclude the observations for EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, whether the vehicle can travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle.

2. To change the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. To Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file and compare the results in table.

BODY OF CONTENT:

Advisor tool:

ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.

Procedure:

  • Download the ADVISOR tool from the link https://sourceforge.net/projects/adv-vehicle-sim/
  • Extract the downloaded file.
  • Now right click on the current folder section by clicking the ADVISOR folder and click
'Add on path → Select folders and Sub-folders'.
  • Type 'advisor' in command window. The ADVISOR software tool will open.

Select 'Metric' and click start.

1. Using ADVISOR tool For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle?

The ADVISOR tool will open.

  • In the 'Load File', select 'EV_defaults_in'.
  • Change the 'cargo mass' to 500.
  • Then, select continue.

In the next section, select 'CYC_FTP' in Drive cycle.

Then, select 'RUN'.

The next window will open, which displays the results for number of cycles as 1.

Observation:

It is observed that for 1 number of cycle, the vehicle cannot be reached for 45 km and it is covered only for 17.8 km.

Next, the number of cycle is increased to 2 and made to run.

Observation:

It is observed that for 2 number of cycle, the vehicle cannot be reached for 45 km and it is covered only for 35.5 km.

Next, the number of cycle is increased to 3 and made to run.

Observation:

It is observed that for 3 number of cycle, the vehicle cannot be reached for 45 km and it is covered only for 41.1 km which is maximum SOC.

By changing other parameters like battery type or capacity, the vehicle can be reached to 45 km.

2. Changing the battery capacity and repeating the simulation:

In the 'Energy storage' section of the vehicle, the battery capacity is changed and results are observed.

In the '#of mod V nom', the module of the battery is increased from 25 and results are observed.

Energy storage with 26 modules and 3 number of cycles:

Results for Energy storage with 26 modules and 3 number of cycles:

It is found that for 26 module, it can run for 42.7 km which is insufficient. So it is made to run for 27 module of energy storage.

Energy storage with 27 modules and 3 number of cycles:

Results for Energy storage with 27 modules and 3 number of cycles:

It is found that for 27 module, it can run for 44.8 km which is insufficient. So it is made to run for 28 module of energy storage.

Energy storage with 28 modules and 3 number of cycles:

Results for Energy storage with 28 modules and 3 number of cycles:

Finally for 28 module of Energy storage in battery, the vehicle crossed 45 km which can run upto 46.3 km.

Therefore for drive cycle 3, following results are obtained.

3. Performance of gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file:

First, change the vehicle model to PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_ by clicking and selecting load file.

Then click continue. In the next window, select 'Gradeability Test' option and vary the inputs.

The given inputs for the test are speed and duration. By varying those parameters, the test results are performed.

Results for 10 seconds duration:

Gradeability results for 10 mph speed and 10 seconds duration:

CONCLUSION:

  1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg and FTP drive cycle with all other default conditions, the vehicle can drive for maximum upto 41.1 kms with 100% SOC with 3 cycles. Thus, it cannot travel for 45 kms under given conditions.
  2. The battery capacity in the energy storage is increased from 25 to 26,27 and 28 Energy capacity modules and simulation is performed where only when the energy capacity in modules is 28, the vehicle crosses 45 km distance travelled which can travel upto 46.3 kms. As the modules in energy capacity increases, the voltage, battery weight and distance travelled also increases.
  3. The gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file is performed for 10 seconds and 50 seconds duration and by increasing the speed, results are obtained which is concluded that as the speed increases, the gradeability decreases.
