Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Answer 1:

Step 1:Load EV_ default for EV.

Load Advisor tool is changed to EV_default_in. The Defaults Parameters are shown below.

The GUI Shows the Vehile Parameters for A default EV. With Electric Motor, Battery, Transmission.

Parameters.

The vehicle is a Simulated Car. with a Lead acid battery, wth ES PB 25. whose total weight is 275 kg. It has 25 modules.

The battery is 12.8 V battery, with a maximum instantaneous power of 3.5 KW when fully charged

The motor is MC AC 75. Its a 75 Watt motor with a peak efficiency of 92 % and weight about 91 KG.

The transmission ins a Manual Transmission (TX_1SPD ) weighing 50 KG

Step 2: Change the cargo weight to 500 kg

The Cargo weight is changed to 500 kg, increasing the toal weight to 1508 kg.

Step 3: Choosing the drive cycle.

The Drive cycle is FTP, with a Total distance of 17.77 Km. Since we need to check if it can travel 45 Km with this battery. The Number of Cycles was increased to 3 ( 3* 17.77 ) 53.1 km. which is good enough to check the battery performance.

Step 4: Running the Simulation

Conclusion:

From The Simulation we can observe the Vehicle is Unable to complete 45 Km with this battery. The maximum distance travelled is 41.4 Km

The vehicle doesnt complete the drive cycle.

Q 2 . In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

By Changing the Battery Capacity to 50 instead of the 25 the battery weight becomes 550 kg, and the total weight becomes 1783 Kg.

Simulating this with the same drive cycle. we get the result as shown below.

We can see with this battery pack the Vehicle can travel 53 km more than the required 45 km.How ever this is more than the required.

Therefor simulating again with different battery capacity.

The minimum battery Capacity for the Vehicle to travel 45 Km is 28.

BY using 28 Batteries, the vehicle travels 46.3 km which is more than the requirement of travelling 45 km with this Drive Cycle.

if more battery are added, the car can travel further than 45 km. however, as we use more battery, the weight also increases, thus the weight to power ratio will not be good.

Q3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in table and conclude.

Answer:

The Gradability test can be done in several ways. One is we can keep a fixed speed and find the maximum sustainable gradability for the that Speed and then make a table of gradability for different values of speed.

STEP 1:

For the Gradability Test, The Prius_Jpn_defaults_in file must be loaded in the Advisor tool.

For the test the default setting is kept.

STEP 2 : Selecting a driving Cycle.

For the test a Driving cycle has to be selected, Different driving cycle will give a slightly different result. However for this test, we are only testing for speed. A default CYC_UDDS Cycle is chosen for this test.

For the Default Gradability Settings:

We get a Gradability of 1.7 for 55 miles/hr speed.

by ENABLING All systems,

the gradability increases to 8.9 % as this used both the electric and engine power. By keeping Enable all systems, we will test the Model further.

Now keeping all systems enabled, with the below parameters, we will test the vehicle for different speed from 0 miles to 100 miles with an incriment of 5 miles.

The Results are put in a table and a graph plotted as shown below.

Conclusion:

It could be noticed that as the speed is increased the maximum sustainable gradability starts to reduce, drastically first and more steadily as the speed increases. the maximum gradability for this model is 32.8 at 5 mils an hour. and the maximum sustaible speed for prius is 100 miles an hour with a gradability of 1.3 %.
