Challenge

Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Aim: Use ADVISOR tool and simulate the following

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in table and conclude.

Theory:

ADVISOR stands for ADvanced Vehicle SimulatOR which is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles.

ADVISOR follows Backword Model since it starts with the Drive train and ends at the Energy Storage. It provides Macro Statistics and instantaneous prediction of fuel consumption and performance.

Problem #1 For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

The EV_defaults_in is selected on the Load File and cargo mass is set at 500 kg as shown below which also changes the Total Mass( Keeping all other parameters in their default conditions)

Default Battery Capacity of 25 modules

Next, Drive Cycle is set at FTP as shown, with no. of cycles equal to 1

From the table below, one can see that the distance the vehicle will be ablt to cover is 11.04 miles which is equal to 17.76 km which is much less than the desired distance.

The SOC graph mentioned below shows that SOC drops down to 60% at the end of 1 Drive Cycle.

So, in order to complete 45km, we increase the no. of cycle to 3 which gave the Results as shown

One can clearly see that the distance covered is 25.7 miles which is equal to 41.36 km with the warning "Required Distance exceeded EV Range"

The total seconds vehicle run is 5410 seconds.

Problem #2 In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

I increased the no. of modules for the Battery to 30 in the above scenario as shown

For 1 cycle the distance covered is same i.e. 17.76 km but the SOC in this case drops to around 70%

So, in order to complete 45km, we increase the no. of cycle to 3 which gave the Results as shown.

The total distance in this case travelled is 30.5 miles which is equal to 49 km before EV runs out of its range as the Warning depicts.

The total seconds vehicle run is 7129 seconds.

Problem #3 Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

The PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in is set in Load file with all default parameters.

As we go the next GUI Screen, here is the table for 1 drive cyle which shows that the vehicle will run for 1369 seconds and will cover 7.45 miles (11.98 km)

Gradeability checkbox is marked in order to run the gradeablity test

Initial parameters for Gradeability test is as shown below, Speed is 55 mph and duration of 10 seconds

The result is as shown below

Gradeability at 55, 70 and 85 mph are as shown below

As it can be seen that the Gradeability decreased with increase in speed and finally failed at 85 mph.

Conclusion

1. The distance covered by Electric Vehicle can be increased with increasing its battery capacity which increase the State of Charge for a given drive cycle.

2. The gradeability decreases with increase in the speed of the vehcile.
