Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

1. For the EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with an FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Solution:

Open Advisor tool -> choose "matric" -> Start

Choose 'EV_defaults_in' in the load file drop-down box.

Change the cargo mass to 500kg, as shown in the below screenshot.

Press 'Continue'

Choose 'CYC-FTP' in the drive cycle dropdown.

The FTP drive cycle window looks like this.

Click on 'RUN'.

The below graphs contain the drive cycle, ess_soc (energy storage system and state of charge), vehicle speed, and vehicle acceleration.

Conclusion :

  • The maximum speed attained by the vehicle with 123.7kmph.
  • The time taken for the vehicle to reach 45kmph is 4.2 sec.
  • The vehicle can reach 45-kmph in 4.2 sec even if the cargo mass to 500kg.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Solution :

To change the battery capacity follow the below steps.

we can change the battery type (lead-acid, li-ion, supercapacitor, etc..) as shown in the drop-down box below.

we can change the battery capacity by change the value of '#of mod' i.e number of modules.

The default value of the battery modules is 25 and v=308.

Changing the number of battery modules to 40, voltage-V automatically changes its value due to the increase in modules, the voltage will be 493V.

Apart from these changes, we have not made any changes.

The Cargo mass of the vehicle remains 500kg and the drive cycle is 'CYC-FTP'.

after running the model, we have the below results.

The below graphs contain the drive cycle, ess_soc (energy storage system and state of charge), vehicle speed, and vehicle acceleration.

Conclusion:

  • As we observe, the time taken by the vehicle to reached 45kmph is 3.2 (the default time taken is 4.2 sec).
  • The top speed of the vehicle is 148.3 (the default top speed is 123.7).
  • The performance of the vehicle increases with an increase in battery capacity.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in a table and conclude.

Solution:

The Toyota Prius is a full hybrid electric automobile manufactured by Toyota since 1997.

To perform the gradeability test, follow the below steps.

Open the 'PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_' model using the same steps as mentioned above.

we can change the parameters depending on the requirements, for the below gradeability test we have not changed any parameters, all parameters have their default values.

Click on 'Continue'.

We can choose any driving cycle from the dropdown box depending on the requirement, for the below analysis we have selected 'CYC_UDDS' i.e - Urban driving cycle.

Since we are interested in the Gradability of the vehicle, select the Gradeability test box as shown below.

click in the 'Grade option'.

we can see the below window opening.

make the selection as shown in the below screenshot.

We need to change the speed of the vehicle keeping the time constant to get the gradability of the vehicle.

For the below observation, we have to vary the speeds 45kmph, 60kmph, and 90kmph.

The duration is kept constant at 10sec.

Click on OK and RUN the Simulation

Check the change in gradeabiliy for speed 40, 60, and 90kmph respectively, record the change in gradeability of the vehicle.

For speed = 45kmph.

For speed = 60kmph.

For speed = 90kmph.

Observation Table:

Speed (kmph) 45 60 90
Duration (sec) 10 10 10
Gradability at (kmph) 72.4 96.6 144.8
Gradability (%) 10.7 8.1 2.8
Time taken to reach 45kmph. 5 5 5
maximum speed (kmph) 163.4 163.4 163.4

Graph:

Conclusion:

  • By keeping the duration constant and varying the speed, the grabeabiltiy at kmph increase with the increase in speed which in term decreases the percentage of gradability.
  • In other words, a vehicle moving towards Flyover at higher speeds feels a reduction in gradeability percentage compared to the vehicle moving at lower speeds.
