Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Aim: The following challenge has 3 exercises using Advisor tool in MATLAB:

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.

Solution:

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle?

Performing tests for 1 FCP drive cycle:

Results:

Distance vs Time Plot for 1 FTP drive cycle:

The vehicle runs almost 18000 m (18 Km) at 1 FTP drive cycle.

Simulation after 3 FTP drive cycles:

We can see that the simulation stops after around 2.5 FTP drive cycles as the state of charge reaches the value of 0 and the motor stops working.

The distance covered by the vehicle in this time around 42000 m (42 Km), which is less than 45 Km.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation:

The battery capacity was changed from 25 Ah to 30 Ah and the simulation was done:

Simulation also included 3 FTP drive cycles:

The following results were achieved:

We can see in the above distance vs time graph that the vehicle had almost completed 3 FTP drive cycles before the state of charge reached 0 and the vehicle has travelled a distance of almost 50000 m (50 Km), which is more than 45 Km.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file:

Performing Gradeability test with default parameters and UDDS drive cycle:

Gradeability at 10 mph = 30.3%

Gradeability at 20 mph = 19.8%

Gradeability at 30 mph = 14.7%

Gradeability at 40 mph = 11.7%

Gradeability at 50 mph = 9.7%
