Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Q1. Simulating the EV_defaults_in file:

In the ADVISOR tool, the EV_defaults_in file was selected. This is a electric vehicle with lead acid battery and a motor of 75kW. The cargo mass was modified to 500kgs.

After clicking on continue we went to the next screen where the drive cycle was selected as FTP (Federal Test Procedure) and the number of cycles was changed to 5 as we were trying to check the SOC of battery to see how long it would run.

After clicking on run, we got the following output:

The third plot was changed by changing the component to other and selecting distance in plot variable.

Inference:

From the plots, it can be inferred that that maximum distance travelled by the EV before getting completely discharged is 41.4 km. Hence, it cant reach the 45km mark.

Q2. In the above case, the battery capacity was changed from 25 kW to 40kW

Output:

Inference:

It can be seen that the total distance travelled by the car before the battery dying is 64.5 km. Hence, the 45 km mark will be easily reached at SOC ~0.3 (30% battery remaining).

Q3. Toyota Prius is a Hybrid Electriv Vehicle with a planetary gearbox. It has a fuel convertor, a generator and a motor to provide the traction power.

The gradeability test was performed on prius by changing its velocities at steps of 10mph.

Gradeability is the steepness of grade that a motor vehicle is capable of climbing at efficient speed.

The outputs were as follows:

Tabulating the results for various speeds:

Velocity(km/h) Gradeability(%)
10 32.6
20 27.5
30 20.9
40 16.6
50 14.4

Inference:

It can be seen that as the speed of the vehicle goes on increasing, its gradeability reduces which means at a steady high speed you can climb lesser angles as compared to steady low speed. They are inversely proportionate.
