Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Aim:

Use the ADVISOR tool and simulate the following

1) For the EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

2) Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.

Compare your results in a table and conclude.

Aim 1:

Use the ADVISOR tool and simulate the following

For the EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Software Used: ADVISOR.

Procedure:

1) Open MATLAB and type 'advisor' in the command window to start the ADVISOR tool.

2) In the Load File section, select EV_defaults_in file.

3) Change the Cargo Mass to 500 kg and maintain all other values as default. Then press the continue button.

4) In the next GUI, select FTP drive cycle while maintaining all the other parameters as default and click on run.

5) The final GUI gives us the results.

Selecting vehicle type and changing the Cargo Mass to 500 Kg:

Selecting the FTP drive cycle:

Results:

From the above results image, it is clear that our vehicle has travelled a distance of 11 miles i.e. 17.70 Km with just 40% battery power consumption.

45 Km is approximately 28 Miles. So, now let us now select the no. of cycles as 3 (Since each FTP cycle is 11 Miles) i.e. total 33 miles approximately and check whether the vehicle can run 28 miles or not.

From the above screenshot it is clear that with the current battery capacity, the vehicle can run only for a distance of 25.7 miles i.e. 41.36 Km and not 45 Km. So, in order to make the vehicle touch the 45 Km mark, we need to increase the battery capacity.

Let us now change the no. of battery modules in the same model to 26 (Total battery voltage of 321 V) and check whether the vehicle can run up to 45 Km.

From the above figure, it is quite clear that with the given no. of battery modules the vehicle can just run 26.5 Miles i.e. 42.64 Km. Hence, we need to increase the no. of modules further in order to attain 45 Km.

Let us now change the no. of battery modules in the same model to 28 (Total battery voltage of 345 V) and check whether the vehicle can run up to 45 Km.

From the above screenshot it is clear that with the current battery capacity, the vehicle can run only for a distance of 28.8 miles i.e. 46.34. Hence, the vehicle with 28 battery modules will suffice our purpose.

Aim 2:

Use the ADVISOR tool and simulate the following

Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Also compare your results in a table and conclude.

Software Used: ADVISOR.

Procedure:

1) Open MATLAB and type 'advisor' in the command window to start the ADVISOR tool.

2) In the Load File section, select PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Maintain all other values as default and then press the continue button.

4) In the next GUI, while maintaining all the other parameters as default enable the Gradeability Test. In Grade Options, set speed and duration as 35 mph and 10 sec respectively.

5) The final GUI gives us the gradeability and other results.

6) Repeat the same as above 4 more times with time 10 sec as constant and speed as variable i.e 45 mph , 55 mph, 65 mph, 75 mph (In the Grade Options).

Selecting the vehicle type:

Selecting the cycle and setting up grade options:

Results:

From the results screenshot, it is clear that the gradeability of the vehicle for this configuration at a speed of 35 mph is 2.4%.

We have repeated the same as above 4 more times with time 10 sec as constant and speed as variable i.e 45 mph , 55 mph, 65 mph, 75 mph (In the Grade Options) and the results obtained are shown below:

Hence, for the given time i.e. 10 sec, the gradeability decreases as the speed increases.
