Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations?

ADVISOR is an ADvance VehIcle SimulatOR

We can benefit form ADVISOR tool if we want to -

  • estimate the fuel economy of the vehicle that is not yet built
  • this is used to check and know the battery state of charge with respect to drive-cycle
  • compare the tailpipe emissions for different environmental conditions
  • get an idea about the energy management system for hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, and conventional vehicles
  • optimise the gear ratio gear ratios to minimise the transmission loss and maximise performance

The layout of ADVISOR tool is

I took the load as = 500 kg

For this load and taking all the remaining parameters as default for FTP drive cycle.

We ran the solution and found that for the FTP drive cycle the electric vehicle can just achieve 17.8 km of range for 1 drive cycle.

Conclusion-

For 500 kg cargo in EV_defaults_in the vehicle can just travel 17.8 km. For getting the range of 45 km we have to make some changes in the ADVISOR input.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

I simulated the different conditions to get the required range.

  • First increased the battery modules from 25 to 40 with only 1 driving cycles:-

The result is given below

Conclusion A-

For similar conditions, by increasing the battery modules to 40 I found that there is no change in range.

  • Now changed the number of drive cycles to 2 and keeping the battery module to 40:-

Conclusion B-

By changing the number of cycles to 2 we found that the range is 35.5 km.

Here we found that the range can be changed by making changes in driving cycle.

  • Let's change the battery modules to 50 and the number of driving cycles to 3:-

The results are given below,

Conclusion-

For 50 battery module and 3 number of driving cycle we found range is 53.3 km.

so we can say that to achieve 45 km range we can make an EV with 500 kg load and 50 battery modules and 3 FTP driving cycles.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in table and conclude.

First load the load file and keeping all other parameters as it is we can see the outlay of the PRIUS and other values, after clicking continue the next dialogue box will appear where we have to tik the box opposite to the Gradeability test.

Here in this whole simulation process we will try to find different grade percentage for different speed.

Here we can see the Gradeability dialogue box

  • Case-1, for speed = 8 mph = 12.87 kmph :-

First we assumed the velocity as 8 mph i.e. 12.87 kmph and found out that the gradeability as 31.8%, which is very high.

Here we considered other value as default just changed the velocity to see the change in grade.

  • Case-2, for speed = 15 mph = 24.1 kmph :-

Now we changed the velocity value to 15 mph i.e. 24.1 kmph we found that the grade percent is decreased significantly i.e. 24.4%

  • Case-3, for speed = 33 mph = 53.1 kmph :-

Now let's change the velocity value to 33 mph i.e. 53.1 kmph we found that the grade percent is 13.7%

  • Case-4, for speed = 45 mph = 72.4 kmph :-

Let's change the velocity to 45 mph i.e. 72.4 kmph and the grade percent is 2.2%

  • Case-5, for speed = 60 mph = 96.6 kmph :-

Now the velocity changed to 60 mph i.e. 96.6 kmph and the grade is 1.5%

Conclusion :-

Here It's clear that the grade is changing significantly with changing velocity. One trend is clear that with increase in velocity the grade is decreasing very rapidly. WE can see it in the table below-

S.L NO. Velocity in mph Velocity in kmph Grade in %
1 8 12.87 31.8
2 15 24.1 24.4
3 33 53.1 14.7
4 45 72.4 2.2
5 60 96.6 1.5
