Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

AIM :

Using ADVISOR tool in MATLAB simulate the gradeability and drive cycle.

OBJECTIVE :

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions. Check the vehicle if it can travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle.

2. For the same case 1, by changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. To perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

THEORY :

ADVISOR, NREL's ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data and script text files for use with MATLAB and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modelling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.

CASE - 1:

For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions. Check the vehicle if it can travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle.

Ans : The EV vehicle means Electric Vehicle which is driven by a battery power source.

From the given details,

The Cargo Mass is changed to 500kg from default value of 136 kg and the drive cycle chosen is FTP (Federal Test Procedure) amd the maximum distance travelled is 11.04 miles i.e 17.7 km

Now we have to achieve 45km of distance the FTP Drive cycle to be repeat by 2.54 times, then for these 2.54 times of cycle the distance of 45km is covered.

From the above result, we can understand that this vehicle couldn't cover the distance of 45km and it shows an error i.e. required distance exceeded the EV range. To overcome this problem we have to increase the battery capacity.

CASE - 2:

For the same case 1, by changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Ans: The battery modules are changed from 25 to 33, so now the vehicle runs for required distance

The battery module value is changed as below:

After this change battery capacity increased and gave more power to vehicle.

Note: From this simulation we can observe that just by increasing battery module capacity the vehicle can run for more distance than the normal.

CASE - 3:

To perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Ans: A Toyota Prius vehicle is a fully Hybrid electric automobile which has both IC drive systems.

Now we have to perform the gradeability test by increasing the speed of vehicle for constant duration of 40 sec

The following are the results obtained for various speeds for Gradeability

Table below shows the record of gradeability test for various speeds of vehicle

CONCLUSION :

From the above test results of simulation we can say that when vehicle Speed increases then the Gradeability decreases.
