Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
WEEK-3 CHALLENGE: ADVISOR TOOL
AIM:
To use the advisor tool and simulate the following objectives.
OBJECTIVE:
- For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
- In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
- Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
- Compare the results in table and conclude.
TOOLS USED:
- MATLAB R2020b-Trail
- ADVISOR TOOL
ADVISOR TOOL:
ADVISOR, NREL’s Advanced Vehicle Simulator, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with MATLAB and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modelling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
Benefits of the ADVISOR tool,
- Estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
- Learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
- Compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
- Evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
- Optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
The models in ADVISOR are:
- mostly empirical, relying on drivetrain component input/output relationships measured in the laboratory, and
- quasi-static, using data collected in steady state (for example, constant torque and speed) tests and correcting them for transient effects such as the rotational inertia of drivetrain components
How to start ADVISOR tool,
- Launch MATLAB and first set default location folder to the advisor.
- Now in the command window of the MATLAB type advisor and press enter.
- A new window will open and then set metric for unit and start ADVISOR now it will open a new window.
ADVISOR TOOLS HAVE THREE WINDOWS:
- Vehicle input window
- Simulation parameter window
- Results window

Fig1.1 The Basic Advisor Tool Window
QUESTION:1 For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
EXPLANATION:
- First loading the EV_defaults_in from the load file in the parameter window.
- Now changing the cargo mass to 500kg.
- Now the total mass will be changed.
- Now select the continue button after that a new simulation window pop-up.

Fig 1.2 EV_default setup
5.In simulation parameter window change the drive cycle to CYC_FTP by selecting given cycles.
6.The following results obtained to changed the drive cycle pattern in single cycle.

Fig 1.3 CYC_FTP setup
7.After we can run the simulation to find the results to the given drive cycle.
8.The following results we obtained the vehicle travelled in a single cycle.
9.The distance travelled by the vehicle in a single cycle is 17.8km and also the SOC 40% used.

Fig 1.4 First drive cycle results
10.We obtained only 17.8 km in first cycle. So, we can continue the 2nd cycle

Fig 1.5 second drive cycle results
11.The distance travelled by the vehicle in 2nd drive cycle the vehicle complete the distance was 35.5km. The battery of SOC 80% used.
12.Still now we are not obtained the given distance so, repeat the one extra cycle. Cycle no.3.

Fig 1.6 Third drive cycle results
13.The distance travelled by the vehicle in 3rd drive cycle the vehicle complete the distance was 41.4km. The battery of SOC completely used 100%.
OBSERVATIONS:
- The given EV_default load file with drive cycle CYC_FTP the vehicle covered the distance of 17.8,35.5,41.4 kms with 1st,2nd,3rd respective drive cycles. The third drive cycle the vehicle consumes 100% (SOC)of the battery.
- Therefore EV_default cannot travel distance of 45km due to insufficient SOC battery capacity.
QUSETION:2 In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation
EXPLANATION:
- In order to the first question the vehicle not achieved the travel distance of 45km in third cycle and also the battery capacity nil. So, that we can increase the battery module and find the results.
- Already in older case the battery module was 25. So, we can increase the next no. of module.
- To change the module in energy storage setup.

Fig 2.1 Energy storage module

Fig 2.2 26th module change results
- The module increases by 26 in a third cycle the vehicle travelled 42.7km and complete the battery capacity. Used 100% SOC.

Fig 2.3 27th module change results
- The module increases by 27 in a third cycle the vehicle travelled 44.8km and complete the battery capacity. Used 100% SOC.

Fig 2.3 28th module change results
- The module increases by 28 in a third cycle the vehicle travelled 46.3km and complete the battery capacity. Used 100% SOC.
OBSERVATIONS:
- We can increase the battery module the vehicle travelling distance will be increased.
- The EV_default_in which satisfy the given 45km with payload of 500kg in FTP drive cycle was achieved.
QUSESTION 3: Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare the results in table and conclude.
EXPLANATION:
- In advisor window to load the file name in a dropdown menu to select the PRIUS_jpn_default
- Continue the next window. The simulation parameter window will open.
- Select the gradeability test and click on the grade option box, and a new dialogue box will open.

Fig 3.1 Select the gradeability test
- The grade option box we can change speed or duration with respect to our simulation.
- So, for this simulation we can change the speed and then the duration time.
- To select the all systems enabled and also click on constant road grade.
- To click ok and run the simulation and a result window will open showing different results depend upon input data.
OUTPUT RESULTS:
- CONSTANT TIME DURATION – 10SEC
- SPEED 10 m/h
- SPEED – 10MILES/HOUR – GRADEABILITY = 30.3 %

Fig 3.2 Gradeability – 30.3%
- CONSTANT TIME DURATION – 10SEC
- SPEED 20 m/h

Fig 3.3 Gradeability – 19.8%
- CONSTANT TIME DURATION – 10SEC
- SPEED 30 m/h

Fig 3.4 Gradeability – 14.7%
- CONSTANT TIME DURATION – 10SEC
- SPEED 40 m/h

Fig 3.5 Gradeability – 11.7%
- CONSTANT TIME DURATION – 10SEC
- SPEED 50 m/h

Fig 3.6 Gradeability – 9.7%
- Further we can calculate 20 secs time duration the respective gradeability as follows,

TABLE 3.1 GRADEABILITY CHART
OBSERVATIONS:
- We observe the results, so when the vehicle speed increases and there are decreases the gradeability for both 10secs and 20 secs time duration.
- When the vehicle speed increases there is decrease in gradeability.
CONCLUSION:
Thus, the advisor tool and all the objectives were successfully stimulated.
