Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
AIM -
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file Compare your results in table and conclude.
INTRODUCTION -
ADVISOR tool, developed in November 1994 by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), allows users to simulate and analyze conventional, advanced, light and heavy vehicles including hybrid electric and fuel cell vehicles. The tool allows users to asses the effect of changes in vehicle components such as motor, batteries, catalytic converters, climate control system, alternative fuels and other modifications that might affect fuel economy, emissions or performance.
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
First, loading EV_defaults_in from the drop - down menu and changing parallel_defaults_in to EV_defaults_in from vehicle inputs window.
- Now changing the cargo mass to 500 kg.
- Click on the continue button after that a new window simuation parameters will pop up

- In simulation parameters window change drive cycle to CYC_FTP by selecting in drop down menu
- Below that we can # of cycles, from here we can select no. of drive cycles.

- After pressing the RUN Button, the simulation will start and it will shw results in a new window.

-
No. of Drive cycle Distance travelled in km SOC 1 17.8 40 2 35.5 81 3 41.4 100
CONCLUSION -
Refering the above results the vehicle cannont travel a distance of 45 km on a single charge.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
- Now, we will change the battery capacity from vehicle inputs section in energy storage.
- We will repeat the above procedure for increased no. of battery modules as follows
- Energy Storage system with 26 modules and 2 drive cycles

- Energy Storage system with 26 modules and 3 drive cycles

- Energy Storage system with 27 modules and 2 drive cycles

- Energy Storage system with 27 modules and 3 drive cycles

- Energy Storage system with 28 modules and 2 drive cycles

- Energy Storage system with 28 modules and 3 drive cycles

RESULT TABLE -
1. No. of Drive cycles = 2
| Battery Mod | Voltage | Distance travelled in km | Battery Weight |
| 26 | 321 | 35.5 | 286 |
| 27 | 333 | 35.5 | 297 |
| 28 | 345 | 35.5 | 308 |
2. No. of Drive Cycles = 3
| Battery Mod | Voltage | Distance travelled in km | Battery Weight |
| 26 | 321 | 42.7 | 286 |
| 27 | 333 | 44.8 | 297 |
| 28 | 345 | 46.3 | 308 |
CONCLUSION -
Based on above result a battery pack of 28 modules is requried to do 45 km in single charge.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file Compare your results in table and conclude.
- In ADVISOR tool we change vehicle to PRIUS_Jpn_default model
- Continue to next window.
- Select the gradiability test and click on the grade options box. A new dialogue box will pop up.

- In grade option box we can change speed or duration with respect to our simulation.
- Change the speed to 20 mph and constant grade
- Click OK and then RUN
1.Time duration = 10 sec.
- Speed = 20 mph = 32.2 kmph Gradeability = 19.8%

- Speed = 25 mph = 40.2 kmph Gradeability = 16.5%

- Speed = 30 mph = 48.3 kmph Gradeability = 14.7 %

- Speed = 35 mph = 56.3 kmph Gradeability = 13.0%

- Speed = 40 mph = 64.4 kmph Gradeability = 11.7%

- Speed = 45 mph = 72.4 kmph Gradeability = 10.7%

2. Time Duration = 20 sec
- Speed = 20 mph = 32.2 kmph Gradeability = 22.9%

- Speed = 25 mph = 40.2 kmph Gradeability = 19.7%

- Speed = 30 mph = 48.3 kmph Gradeability = 17.7%

- Speed = 35 mph = 56.3 kmph Gradeability = 16.0%

- Speed = 40 mph = 64.4 kmph Gradeability = 14.6%

- Speed = 45 mph = 72.4 kmph Gradeability = 13.4%

RESULT TABLE -
- Time Duration = 10 sec.

CONCLUSION -
From above result it can be concluded that as the speed increases there is decrease in the gradeability.
