Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
Ansys Week 10: Bullet Penetrating a bucket Challenge
AIM
To Simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket using three different non-linear materials.
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to simulate the bullet penetrating into a bucket using three different non-linear materials.
- Structural steel Non- Linear.
- Magnesium alloy Non- Linear.
- Aluminum alloy Non- Linear.

PROCEDURE
Geometry
Importing the geometry in the space claim module for checking any abnormalities and surfaces damaged, but the geometry seems ok to run for simulation.

Fig 4: Bullet penetrating bucket
After opening the bullet generating bucket geometry in the mechanical module rename all the parts and then giving each part with their material properties for bucket the structural steel for case 1 and for the bullet to be Tantalum with the stiffness behavior as the Rigid.

Fig 5: Geometry Rename
The contacts are detected by Ansys but those contact for Explicit dynamic simulation and for this geometry is not needed so it is deleted.
Mesh
For the bucket, the body sizing is given with the mesh size 10mm and for overall geometry, the mesh is given as the default, where the nodes are obtained after generating mesh around 8093 and the elements around 21733 which is below student academic limit for simulation process.

Analysis Settings
Giving the end time step as 1 e+07 and the maximum energy error as the 5 with increase the limit compared to previous simulations done also the initial, maximum and the minimum time step to be the program-controlled.

Fig 8: Analysis settings
Giving the fixed support to the bottom face bucket geometry, so it should not move freely once the bullet penetrates at a given velocity.

Fig 9: Fixed support
The bullet is given with a specific velocity to penetrate the bucket, the value of the velocity is -1.39 e+5 in the x-direction and others are to be set as 0(constant).

| Sr.no | Minimum Equivalent stress (MPa) | Maximum Equivalent stress (MPa) | Minimum Total Deformation (mm) | Maximum Total Deformation (mm) |
| Structural Steel | 5.6691 | 1526.1 | 1.9942e-027 | 1390 |
| Magnesium Alloy | 4.4565 | 599.48 | 1.9942e-027 | 1390 |
| Aluminum Alloy | 3.849 | 757.68 | 1.9942e-027 | 1390 |
CONCLUSION
The simulation runs successfully for the velocity to the bullet -1.39e+05 the maximum and minimum stress is to be seen in the structure steel compare to the Mangensium alloy and the aluminum alloy, also for the total deformation the value seems to be same for all three non-linear materials.
