Underbody Coating

INTRODUCTION TO UNDER BODY COATING:

WHAT IS MEANT BY UNDERBODY COATING?

Underbody coating provides the long term protection from the corrosion to the car's underbody parts. It also protects the internal body panels, frame rails and other inner parts of the cars like as engine parts, coolant system, oil tank part and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but they are prone to corrosion resistance.

Rust is the enemy for the owner of car because it damages the inner part of the cavities if the car part components. Afetr some time, the parts of the vehicle starts falling from it's body panel of the car component or any other vehicle component.

Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding (often based on rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile.

It is normally sprayed or painted on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean.

But even if you are getting the undercoating applied after a couple of years, it’s fine too. This is because it can prevent further damage to the undercarriage.

The main purpose of undercoating is to check rust especially in the body components like frame rails along with other exposed metal parts. Underbody coating can also reduce wear and tear.

A car’s underbody is exposed to the most wear and tear caused by muddy water, potholed roads, stones and other obstacles on the road. Because it’s not in plain sight, we often do not see the damage.

3M™ Underbody Treatments offers you a long term solution for issues related to corrosion and rust.

First, the car under body is washed and degreased. Then, the 3M™ Protective Coat is applied with Body Schutz Gold Gun (5 year Warranty) or Undershield gun (2 year warranty).

The 3M™ Body Schutz/Undershield, is a hard coating on the underbody of the car, that is fast-drying, paintable, rubberized, non-toxic and chip-resistant. It also minimizes sound from underneath the vehicle and insulates against the heat and cold.

The 3M™ Underbody Treatment protects the car underbody from rust, increasing the longevity of the car and thus enhancing its resale value.

The classification of underbody coating in vehicle is mentioned below.

1) RUBBERIZED UNDERBODY COATING:

This rubberized coating is very easy freindly and easy to apply on a vehicle so that it protects the rust formation on the interior parts of the car.

It provides the soft rubbery finishing of the component once it is drained off.

This is generally thought of as the best underbody coating for your car. It preserves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches. Applying this to the undercarriage is not much of a hassle either.

2) WAX BASED UNDERBODY COATING:

It is a temporary and shortest kind of underbody coating process which is applied to the vehicle interior parts to it. which is no longer be as strong as the rubberized underbody coating component. iT provides the moderate protection and not applicable for high longer corrosion protection.

This – more or less – ephemeral undercoating will wear away in a few months’ time. On the upside, wax-based undercoating puts up a big fight against moisture. It is also the most affordable option out there.

3) ASPHALT BASED UNDERBODY COATING:

This kind of underbody coating is applied when higher level of prortections arew required and it is suitable for trucks, heavy machinaries. This is used to reduced the noise controlling of the interior vehicle design components. It aslo provides the extra protection for the chips and moisture and it is not paintable and therefore it is applicable for only under carriages.

4) POLYURETHENE UNDERBODY COATING:

This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. Unlike in the case of asphalt-based coating, you can paint over the polyurethane coating.

It seals the cracks and seams to apply easy to the body of the vehicle component, this undercoat prevents the metal from oxidizing from salt and moisture. This underbody coating is sprayed on a underbody  of the interior parts of the vehicle using the spray guns.

Steps involved in Underbody coating:

Pre Treatment Test.

Electrodepotions(ED).

Rust Proof Materials.

Primer.

Top-Coat.

Pre Treatment Test.

The primary objective of getting underbody coating done is preventing metal components that are exposed on the bottom side of the car to damage from corrosion. You can shut out the Adverse effects of corrosion on your car by simply applying a rubberised anti-rust coating all over the belly of your car.

Electrodeposition (ED).

The metal under body and frames of automobiles are coated to prevent corrosion resistance from the rust deposition on the underbody coating component and other areas like roof of the car are just rust proofed when it is not coated to prevent the corrosion and protects it from the electrode despotion of the material charactersetics of the car interior of the parts.

The electrodepostion process can be modified in tyhe BIW body according the material property of the component.

By using the electrodeposition method which prevents the corrosion and rust protection from the cavities formed on the underbody coating.

Primer:

The fourth is the application of primer surface or simply a primer coating component which is gonna applied to the internal parts of the vehicle design parts.

These primers are used to improve the Adhesion between top coat and E-coat, which provides the chipping protections and enhances the paint appereances of the component and it is environmentally commercial for the protections of the side component parts involved in it.

Top Coat:

This is the final coating operations involved in the underbody coating for the vehicle component which consists of two layers,

the base coat and a clear coat. The base coat containes the primary coloring pigment which is more helpful for deposing the coating on the body parts.

This also protects the environmental issues causes to the metal body component of the vehicle and UV light degradation from the outside rays from the desired component of the underbody coating parts.

ADVANTAGES OF USING THE UNDERBIODY COATING IN BIW:

1) Protects Against Rust & Corrosion:

The primary objective of getting underbody coating done is preventing metal components that are exposed on the bottom side of the car to damage from corrosion. You can shut out the Adverse effects of corrosion on your car by simply applying a rubberised anti-rust coating all over the belly of your car.

2) Reduces NVH (Noise Vibrations Harshness) Levels:

Our country is filled with roads having uneven patches and potholes and while we manoeuvre our cars through such sections, the unpaved crumbs, and pebbles hit the car from underneath or get stuck in the wheel wells. The underbody coating’s consistency is so thick that the layer it creates absorbs all the unpleasant noises and vibrations and marginally improves the driving experience.

3) Prevents Paint Chipping:

Running on the highway or while pacing through a city road, you will often encounter sharp gravel or any other unattended object hitting the belly of your car with high momentum. This scrapes and chips off the metal from down below. A thick layer of Underbody Coating definitely comes to aid and minimises the effects of such contacts on the body.

4) Protects Vital Components:

Underneath a car is somewhere a lot of indispensable parts of a car are left exposed like the Engine, silencer, etc. One simply can’t afford to let these parts go bad due to rusting and hence in order to save yourself from a hefty repair bill, a considerably less expensive Anti-Rust Coating is a must.

WHY OUR CARS NEED UNDERBODY COATING PROCESS:

1) A must-have if you live in coastal areas:

  • Vehicles in the coastal areas are much more prone to corrosion than in any other region.
  • The content of salt in the water floating around during the monsoon season is way too high.
  • Adding to this is the humidity in such areas and these elements further speed up the process of corrosion.
  • Hence getting your car done right with a nice underbody coat job is of utmost importance for people living that beach life.

2) Or if you live near un-paved/muddy roads:

  • If you live in areas having large sections of unpaved roads, then monsoon is just going to make things worse.
  • The sand is going to mix with the water and all that muck will get stuck to your car’s belly while you tread over such a course.
  • This makes your car’s underbody more vulnerable to damage and a nice and thick coating will surely help.

All the factors mentioned above make it almost imperative for us to get our car’s underbelly all washed up and then coated comprehensively before the monsoon season hits us.
