Underbody Coating

                                                UNDERBODY COATING

Definition:

Underbody Coating is usually a dense cladding (often rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. Underbody coating provides long term protection from corrosion to car's underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.

Types of Underbody Coating:

1.Rubberized Underbody Coating

This is generally thought of as the best underbody coating for your car. It preserves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches. Rubberized under coatings do a great job of keeping existing rust all covered up and looking sharp, but it does absolutely nothing to slow down the spread of rust and corrosion sometimes the trapped air and moisture may even contribute to rust formation as was the case with Godwin Austin.

2.Polyurethane Underbody Coating

This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. you can paint over the polyurethane coating.

The image shows the Polyurethane coating but not on vehicle but on some industrial machinery.

3.Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating

This type of UBC is best suited for lorries, trucks and large vehicles this provides a greater degree of protection compared to rubber-based coatings. However, asphalt-based coatings contain little amounts of rubber for sound-insulation purposes. The process of applying this coating is a bit time-consuming though.

4.Wax Based Underbody Coating

It is the cheapest option for your car to be out there. Sometimes paraffin-based undercoating is also used. This is more or less ephemeral undercoating will wear away in few months. On the plus side it does a great job in keeping the moisture away.

        Purpose/Advantages of Underbody Coating:

1.Fight Corrosion:

Of course, The principal purpose of Underbody Coating is to prevent the automobile underbody parts from corrosion and hence improving the car-life.

2.Prevention from stone chip:

UBC also helps by forming a protective layer over the coated surface and while travelling on or off road when the stones hit the underbody it keeps the coated surface safe and thereby reduces maintenance.

3.Improve Drive Comfort:

After curing, The Underbody coating becomes a thick elastic coating covering the whole underbody, which acts a good dampening material which significantly reduces the vibrations of sheet metal and noise, thereby improving ride comfort of the passenger.
