Under body coating
Under body coating is a dense cladding applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is sprayed or painted during the manufacturing process or before the car is out after purchase. There is an option of applying the coating after the purchase too.
Why coating?
The main purpose of under coating is to avoid the automobile body components like frame rails along with other exposed metal parts from rusting. It can reduce wear and tear.
Types of Under body coating
- Rubberized under body coating
This is generally considered as the best under body coating for a car. It preserves the under body well,protecting it from scratches. Applying this is not much of a hassle either
- Wax based under body coating
Wax based under body coating provides protection against moisture.This the most affordable option but it will wear away in a few months time.
- Asphalt based under body coating
Asphalt based coating contain little amounts of rubber for sound insulation purposes.The applying of this coating is a time consuming process.
- Polyurethane under body coating
This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle.It offers good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal.
How to apply under coat?
- Spray
The spray is the most common method used by dealers. The spray consists of a tar-like substance that is applied to the undercarriage. It functions as a barrier for salt, moisture, and oxygen, which causes corrosion.
- Electronic
Removing the electrical current capacity of items underneath the vehicles is another method for applying to undercoat. A weak electric current circulates through the material, reducing the chances of rusting.
- Drip oil spray
This can be messy but incredibly effective at protecting the undercarriage. It covers every nook and corner of the chassis, forming a robust layer of protection.
- Dripless oil spray
waxy substance is applied to the body and undercarriage, forming a strong protective layer. It doesn’t take much time to dry; however, the layer can easily wear and tear than the other counter methods.
Advantage of under body coating.
- Protection against Rust
The coating solution stops electrolyte from penetrating inside the metallic surface. Road salt,saltwater and typical waster water play the role of the electrolyte most of the time.
- Absorb noise
Coating serves as an extra layer of insulation,reducing the noise. The padding acts as a barrier between car and the source of noise.
- Reinforcement
If your car comes with stock under body coating, using another coating on top of it, is not going to hurt. It will offer additional reinforcement, protecting the under body from water, road debris, gravel and small pebbles. There would also be a lesser chance for the factory coat to flake away.
- Car’s life
The protection against rusting gives you the biggest advantage, which is the long-life of the vehicle. If undercoating is done the right way, then it will provide protection for up to 10 years
