Underbody Coating
Underbody coating is a protective layer which is applied under the body of a vehicle, which helps to protect the vehicle body from corrosion and also protects other parts of the vehicle’s underbody like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities which are prone to corrosion. The layer which is applied is of rubber sealant, tar, etc. The sealant is applied with the help of spraying guns or a brush. Once the sealant is applied, it acts as a barrier that helps to prevent moisture, salt and other impurities that coming in contact with a vehicle's metallic parts. Thus, underbody coating helps extend the life and overall condition of a vehicle.
Types of Underbody Coating
- Rubberized Underbody Coating
This is the best type of underbody coating for a vehicle as it preserves the underbody from corrosion and also protects from scratches and sound insulation. This is a straightforward process which is made from rubber and solvent and sprayed or brushed on the underbody of the vehicle.
- Wax Based Underbody Coating
In this type wax-based products are sprayed or brushed on the underbody of the vehicle. This type of underbody coating is a less messy process as compared to rubberized underbody coating, and it is best suited for anticorrosion but it wears out after a few months.
- Polyurethane Underbody Coating
As the name suggests polyurethane is sprayed or brushed on the underbody of the vehicle. This type of coating fills up small gaps, splits and fractures. This type provides good protection against corrosion and also bonds well with the metal, if required we can also paint after polyurethane underbody coating.
- Asphalt-based Underbody Coating
This type of underbody coating is best suited for large vehicles like trucks, and lorries as it offers better protection compared to rubberized-based underbody coating however, this type also contains a small amount of rubber for sound insulation. This is a bit time-consuming process hence less preferred in smaller vehicles.
Pros of Underbody Coating
- Protection from corrosion and rust.
- Sound insulation.
- Extension in the life of the vehicle.
- Covers small damages.
- Better appearance of the vehicle.
Cons of Underbody Coating
- After a few months it wears out.
- High cost.
- A messy process as it may require a cleaning process after its application.
- It doesn’t work on corroded parts.
