Underbody Coating

UNDERBODY COATING
underbody coating is the process of covering the underlying area of the vehicle with a layer that helps in cutting off the exposure of the underbody to the atmosphere, It helps in protecting the underbody from corrosion.
It is usually done by spraying or painting the material over the surface. Depending upon the material used the functionality and life of the coat depend.

So based on the material underbody coating has the following types.
1. Rubberized Undercoating
It is an easy-to-apply coat that offers sound damping and also protects the undercarriage from rust and scratches. Its durable and can be painted over if wanted as well as can be removed with the help of removal spray if any bodywork is to be done.
It is one of the best undercoating options as it is simplest and provides the best protection against rust and moisture.

2. Polyurethane Undercoating
It is one of the best coatings which seeps into the cracks filling them and providing protection against rust and moisture. It requires surface preparation(sanding and primer application) so that it can have a better-griped coat.
It also sands quickly if it is to be removed for bodywork. The polyurethane-based coating is expensive in comparison with other coatings.

3. Wax or Paraffin-Based Undercoatings
It is the cheapest and the quickest available undercoating. It protects from rust and moisture. It quickly wears out as compared to other coatings and needs to be stripped and reapplied at least once a year.
Wax-based undercoating never truly harden they drip or flow into the cracks and can offer at least a base protection in moderate humid condition.

4. Asphalt-Based Undercoating
It is more durable against rocks, chips, and moisture and used for heavy vehicles and machinery. It contains a little bit of rubber base which provides noise damping to some extent.
It needs more cure time than the other three and is also non-paintable. Thus only suitable for heavy vehicles used on harsh terrains.

Pros and Cons of Underbody coating.

PROS.
Rust protection - It provides protection against moisture and cuts off atmospheric contact.
Noise damping - It reduces the noise generated underneath the car providing a less noisy ride.
Heat Insulation - It transmits less heat to the cabin providing a comfortable ride.
Scratch protection - It provides protection against stone chips and hits thus reducing the scratches
Prolong life - Improve the life of the vehicle

CONS.
Expensive -The cost of coating is high.
Odor -Depending on the material bad odor generates during vehicle heating
Rust-affected -Protection can't be obtained on already rust-affected areas
Durability -It's durable for 2-5years then it has to be reapplied for better results.
