Underbody Coating
Under Body coating:
The under body coating is a process in which the under body part of a vehicle is hard coated with some materials. The coating is very fast drying and paintable, corrosion resistance and provides protection to the undr body of the car. It comes with different types and charecteristics to prevent the different parts of the body which also includes rust protection.
Purpose:
As we know that our car body is made of iron, steel, aluminium etc elements. All these elements are very much corrosive and they can easily get damaged when they directly come in contact with the air while they are wet. They can be damaged due to dust also. So, the underbody coating is used to prevent all these and protect our paint.
-Types:
There are mainly four parts of under-body:
1. Rubberized Undercoating 2. Polyurethane Undercoating 3. Wax or Paraffin-Based Undercoatings
4. Asphalt-Based Undercoating
There maybe other types too depends on the OEMs.
Now we will discuss about the each and every type of underbody in detail.
1. Rubberized Undercoating:
It is very easy to apply on the car body. It does provide good protection agains dust, corrosion and also dents as rubber has good impact resistance capacity. It is generally considered as one of the simplest procedure.
2. Polyurethane Undercoating:
As the name is suggesting, it is a process of using polyurethane sealant. It is quicker cpmpared to the other one. It takes a little bit surface peperations before taking in action. It is recommended to do sanding and apply some etching primer before the iunderbody process.
3. Wax or Paraffin-Based Undercoatings :
It is the quickest method of underbody coating. It takes no time to perform the process. One should be aware of the fact that it takes off very quickly too. The average working time may be arounf one year. So it will need to be stripped and reapplied once every year.
4. Asphalt-Based Undercoating:
This type is supposed to be extra durable against hard rocks and sand or other materials, so that is why this is widely used in heavy vehicles and trucks. This is aslo non paintable so the underbody is enough.
Now we will talk about Pros and Cons of the underbody coating:
Pros:
- Protection agains rust and corrosion:
This is main advantage and purpose of the coating. It provides protection from dust and corrosion and doesn't let them damage the inner body of the vehicle.
-Sound Insulation:
At some point the coating also work as dampers in the vehicle and provies a layer against the noise and vibration coming out of the car.
Cons:
High cost:
It is higher in cost.
High maintanance cost:
No coating is permanant. You will have to repaint it sooner or later. it will cost you extra.
Risk of damage to the body:
sometimes in local market when the labourers are not skilled, the coating is mistakenly applied at wrong places, such as shafts or universal joints. So that does damage to the parts and body of the car.
