Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly
Objective:
The main purpose of this project is to perform topo clean-up on CAD models of the Engine, gearbox, and transmission, defeature the models for CFD, and finally make CFD mesh around them using the surface wrap utility.
PART I: Engine
- The imported CAD model for the engine is shown below. Its topology needs to be cleaned up so that the actual geometry is clearly visible.
- The model after topology cleanup is shown below.

- The actual geometry has some small holes which will consume a lot of computational resources without any impact on simulation fidelity. Hence, these holes are closed before meshing.
- Also, the belts are removed for mesh simplicity.

- The other models, gearbox, and transmission have relatively cleaner CAD models than the engine.
- So we will merge all three components and clean up any excess features for ease.
- The geometry after closing all gaps and making a water tight geometry is shown below.
- We will use constant element length surface wrap.
- It can be seen that no leaks are present on the outer surface of assembly.
- All the PIDs are selected for meshing as shown.
- A Mesh length of 3 mm was chosen for proper geometry capture & reasonable meshing duration.
- The generated surface wrap is shown below.
