Structural analysis of a buidling using Robot Structural Analysis

Challange 8 : Structural analysis of a buidling using Robot Structural Analysis

Question 1:

What are HVAC systems? Why are they essential in the modeling of buildings

ANS:

The modelling of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is a prominent topic because of its relationship with energy savings and environmental, economic, and technological issues. The modelling of the HVAC system is concerned with the indoor thermal sensation, which is related to the modelling of building, air handling unit (AHU) equipment’s, and indoor thermal processes. Until now, many HVAC system modelling approaches are made available, and the techniques have become quite mature. But there are some shortcomings in application and integration methods for the different types of the HVAC model. The application and integration processes will act to accumulate the defective characteristics for both AHU equipment’s and building models such as nonlinear, pure lag time, high thermal inertia, uncertain disturbance factors, large-scale systems, and constraints.

Here are some of the reasons why HVAC System is essential in the modelling of building

  • HVAC systems control the overall climate in the building. They also make the proper adjustments whenever we experience changes in outdoor temperature. During the winter season, the HVAC systems (mainly the boilers or heaters) work to keep the indoor temperature at a comfortable level. In hotter times of the season, the HVAC systems regulate air temperature by providing the necessary cooling to keep the entire building comfortable.
  • Having a comfortable office climate increases the level of productivity and increases morale amongst the workers and employees. If you let your people work in settings conducive for work, they will surely be motivated to perform better because they feel good in their work environment. No employee will enjoy working in an office where it is freezing, or in an office where you frequently have to ignore your perspiration just to focus on your computer screen. Having a proper HVAC system installed is guaranteed to make your employees happy, hence, giving you better work results in return.
  • HVAC systems not only regulate the temperature inside the building, they also improve the quality of air. The quality of air pertains to humidity, and a typical HVAC system will reduce the amount of humidity in the air so your workers and employees can continue enjoying a cozy and pleasant atmosphere at work.
  • Proper HVAC systems are a worthy investment for any business or building owner because it gives you energy savings. HVAC systems today are automated, which means you no longer have to manually adjust the temperature settings or the time settings of each machine. Given that your entire HVAC system operates in an automated system, proper adjustments will be made right when they are needed. This makes your energy consumption more efficient as it gets rid of energy wasted on improper settings.
  • Another important contribution HVAC systems have on the workplace is that it is believed to also lower the attrition rate of employees. Studies on corporate workplace behaviour and employee motivations suggest that workers are more enticed to keep coming to work if their office is properly cooled and/or heated. Having the proper temperature at work is seen to be one of the most understated factors for building a solid team at work.

2) From week 7 assignment, based on the building designed use the same Revit file to design a HVAC system for each floor to cover the topics included in the class.
a. Typical HVAC unit includes Distribution center
b. Collector
c. Ducts
d. Blower
Based on the layout choose appropriate ducts and elevation using property browser and assign the components to appropriate groups to complete modeling of the HVAC unit

ANS:

AIM : To Add HVAC system for each floor created previously and also include all the related components like Distribution center, collectors, ducts and blowers.

TOOLS USED :

  • Mechanical template, Collaborate tool, Manage links, Specify coordinates, Acquired coordinates, Air terminals, Supply diffusers.

PROCEDURE :

  • Open a new mechanical template and save it using file icon.

  • Using collaborate tab collaborate file.

  1. Then collaborate dialog box appears select within network option and then click on ok.
  2. Draw the grids using grid icon and then specify the coordinates as 0'-0".

3.Select manage link option from the manage icon and add the architectural model created to the mechanical model.

4.Then by selecting aquired coordinates and setting the project coordinates same as that of host.

5.using the system tab to add the supplier and air terminal in each rooms.

6.Selecting all the elements present in the room followed by clicking on duct option.

7.continue to do similar procedure for each and every room.

RESULT :

we have added the HVAC system for the building including distribution center, collectors, ducts and blowers.

3) Use the add-ins tab to load plug-ins for robot structural analysis to your Revit software

ANS:

Steps to add ins tab to load plug-ins for robot structural analysis :

  • Firstly check for the robot structural analysis, whether it is enabled or disabled.
  • If it is not available , we have to download it from auto desk store.
  • On the top right side of the revit we will find a symbol resembling similar to thar of shopping click on the symbol.
  • Then autodesk store opens, there is search box available search for structure analysis followed by the respective version the revit software then download the tool.
  • Thus robot structural analysis will be reflected in our revit software.

4) Why do we need to assess buildings/analyze while modeling elements? Does design affect modeling in anyways?

ANS:

The determination of the effects of loads on physical structures and their component. Structures subject to this type of analysis include all that must withstand loads, such as buildings, bridges, aircraft and ships. The results of the analysis are used to verify a structure's fitness for use, often precluding physical tests.

Structural analysis is thus a key part of the engineering design structures It is a method by which we find out how a structure or a member of a structure behaves when subjected to different loads.

The results of the analysis are used to verify the structure's strength for its uses. Structural analysis is thus a key part of structural engineering

Response means to find out support reactions, bending moment, rotation, stresses, strains, shear force, and deflection that the particular member would undergo due to the application of different types of loads. Analysis of a structure involves its study from the viewpoint of its strength, stiffness, stability, and vibration

For a structural engineer to start a structural design, he/she must have the loads, or forces and moments that a particular member and the structure as a whole have to resist. Unless there are determined the design cannot start.

Hence structure analysis is condition precedent to structural analysis Design affects the modeling as it involves many important load factors which are important for a building to withstand and suppose we have done a modeling of a building and there are some design changes at any particular portion of the building we have to do the modeling as per the design.

5) From the structural model developed in week 6 and 7, export the complete analytical model to robot structural analysis.
a. List your assumptions on what boundary conditions will be realistic for the analysis approach
b. Use the design standards to decide what loads must be applied to floorings based on the type of structure decided
c. List the load combinations and include them in the analysis model
d. Analyze the building and report the following results
i. Maximum Moment in each floor for all Load Combinations
ii. Maximum Displacement in each floor for all Load combinations
iii. Lateral Displacement in building for all Lateral Load combinations
e. After analysis, do you think you have a better approach or idea in modeling structural members?

ANS:

AIM : To perform robot structure analysis to the building created in the previously.

  • a) Boundary conditions are the conditions which are to be satisfied at all parts of a boundary region where differential conditions have to be solved separetely. For the analysis of the structure we have to consider loads, as in oue model we do not have any loads so we have to assume suitable amount of load for the analysis. We have have many forces in any direction along X, Y or Z axis. We have to assume that the total moment as 0 and the structure is in equilibrium. We have to locate loads at suitable positions so as to complete the analysis. The list of parameters required are :
  • Degree of freedom.
  • Type of load.
  • Opposing loads.

b) We can apply different types of loads based on our requirements like:

  1. wind load.
  2. Dead load.
  3. Live load.
  4. Earthquake load.

C) The total number of floors in my building are three and including the ground floor (G+2 floors).

  • 0.9DL +- 1.5 EL, (+-ELx +- 0.3ELy)(+-0.3 ELx +- ELy)(+-ELx +- 0.3 ELy)(+-0.3 ELx +- ELy), these are the four conditions of the x and y coordinates.

D) Analyze the building and report the following results

Maximum Moment in each floor for all Load Combinations
ii. Maximum Displacement in each floor for all Load combinations
iii. Lateral Displacement in building for all Lateral Load combinations

PROCEDURE :

  • First we have to open the structure template file which was created previously using file icon.

  • 2.from the view toolbar select analytic model and go to 3D view.

  • 3.under the manage toolbar and select structural settings option.
  • 4.Then select load combination tool and Now select the amount of load and the type of load we want to apply in the model for the analysis of our building and click ok.

  • 5.click on analysis tab and then select the type of support we want to use in our structural analysis.

  • 6.then click on analysis and now we can see the load calculations we have applied to our structure.

RESULT :

we have calculated the load calculation with the help of the assumed loads we have provided to the software with the help of robot software. In this way we can perfored structure analysis with any desired loads and check the strength of our designed building.

6) What is energy analysis and why do we need to consider it while modeling in Revit? How does the factor of sustainability improve the quality of your design?

ANS:

  • Energy analysis is the way by which we can calculate the amount of energy used in an operation which involves in physical and chemical actions which plays an important role in transferring and exchange of energy. With the help of energy analysis we can analyze the volume of air in and out through the openings and rooms. With this analysis we can find out defects in our project and rectify the plan if we do not have any problems to the environment.
  • In this analysis all the components are taken into consideration like electric equipments and other equipments which releases heat into the environment.
  • The analysis of energy is very important in the modeling of project in Revit as if the energy released into the environment is more then it may cause human and environmental damage.
  • We could implement different techniques where the energy released could be minimized for example using renewable sources of energy like solar panels, biomass, wind energy and so on and also have to recycle the products so that it does not cause much damage to the environment.
  • We can perform the energy analysis for Revit models by using energy analysis for Autodesk Revit. This add-in connects the design power of the Revit project file to the Autodesk green building studio which acts as a basic constrain for calculation and evaluation.
  • The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.
