Steering Geometry 1

1. CALCULATE THE FOLLOWING GEOMETRIC PARAMETERS USING THE GIVEN HARDPOINTS :-

  • Caster.
  • Mechanical trail.
  • Kingpin inclination angle.
  • Scrub radius.
  • Kingpin lateral offset or spindle length.

Given data,

The calculations are done in a spread sheet which is provided below.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xr7VROqvzXX5IbZbFUBKXqdTQ1N6Slg3Mw5WD32Xd3o/edit?usp=sharing

The calculated values are,

  • Caster = 5.38 deg.
  • Mechanical trail = 9.49 mm.
  • Kingpin inclination angle = 10.01 deg.
  • Scrub radius = 32.37 mm.
  • Kingpin lateral offset = 85.26 mm.

2. CALCULATE THE RESTORING MOMENT ACTING AT THE POINT WHERE THE KINGPIN INTERSECTS THE GROUND VIEW :-

Given,

Pnuematic trail = 25 mm.

Lateral force = 2000 N.

We know that, mechanical trail is 9.49 mm.

Restoring moment = (mechanical trail + pnuematic trail)*lateral force

= (9.49 + 25)*2000

= 68980 N-mm.
