Project 1 Mechanical design of battery pack

AIM: To design a battery pack having a capacity of 18 kWh.

ASSUMPTIONS:

  1. The battery pack is considered to be made up of 10 modules with similar specifications, connected in series.
  2. The modules provide a total of 450 V dc with 40 Ah making the capacity of the total battery pack equal to 18 kWh.
  3. Each module has a voltage of 45 V provides 40 Ah and are connected in series.

BODY:

CELL:

The chosen cell is ANR26650M1-B with the specification as per the data-sheet is given below:

The cell can be connected in a combination of series and parallel to construct the module, using cell holders, and can be connected using nickel strips.

MODULE:

Voltage of module = 90 V

Current of module = 40 Ah

Capacity of module = 45 x 40 = 3600 Wh = 1.8 kWh

No. of cells in series configuration = 45/3.3 = 13.63 = 14

No. of cells in parallel configuration = 40/2.5 = 16

Total no. Of cells = 14x16 = 224

Weight of the cells = total no. Of cell in the module x weight of each cell = 448 x 0.076 kg = 17.02 kg

Considering the BMS and packing structure weight to be 25%.

Total weight of the module = 1.25 x 17.02 = 21.27 kg

Total dimension = LxBxH = 490mm x 430mm x 85mm.

BATTERY PACK:

No. Of modules = 10

Total weight of the battery pack = no. of modules x weigh of each module = 10 x 21.27 = 212.7 kg.

Total capacity of battery pack = no. of modules x Capacity of module = 10 x 1.8 kWh = 18kWh.

The final design can be like the below-shown pack.

CONCLUSION:

The battery pack is constructed successfully using ANR26650M1-B cells.
