Challenge

Wiring harness on V16 Engine.

Aim- To route the wiring harness on given Engine and flatten view drawing in CATIA V5.

Objective

  • To route wiring harness for v-16 engine
  • Create flateening view of the drawing
  • Apply protection covering
  • Provide all detail like clips, mound, continuty etc.
  • Apply PAckaging rules

Assumptions-

  • Provide clips/clamps as per requirement.
  • Make sure that there is no any fauling case while designing the wire harness. Additional clips/clamps may be used to avoid fauling case.
  • Give additional slack if needed. 5-10% slack is sufficient.
  • Avoid routing over bolt and bolted joints to avoid harness puncture.
  • Avoid routing on sharp edges or else provide protection over the harness.
  • Follow the clearance distance and keep away the harness from heat generation components.
  • Protection should be provided as needed according to surrounding temperature.
  • Avoid direct support for harness on fuel lines routed in the engine.
  • Use plastic guiding channels if needed.
  • Branch length should be greater than 50mm.
  • Minimum distance between two branch points should be at least 50mm.
  • Minimum distance between clip and branch point should be at least 25mm.
  • Avoid too many sheet metal brackets on the engine. Try to use available threaded bosses on the engine or demand for it.
  • The wiring harness should be easy to assemble and easy to access.
  • While using dummy connectors, ensure that whatever positions you are defining that are practical. Bundle diameters and another placements can be defined properly for the wire harness routing.
  • If the packaging area is too tight and there are many packaging constraints then we can think of creating harness channel which can be used to route and protect the wire harness effectively.

1.DOWNLOAD THE ENGINE MODEL

Download the engine model from skill lync and concert the model into .CAt if the given file STP or IGS

2.CREATE CONTEXT ASSEMBLY

Context aseembly is created as Context_assy_engine in assembly design

3.DEFINE ELECTRICALLY DEFINE CONNECTOR AND CLIP IN ELECTRICAL PART DESIGN

C-1563689-12

Defining connector connection point using connector connection point command and define the parameters as shown in the image below

Define bundle connection point using bundle connection point command and define the parameters as below.

Hence the connector is defined electrically

173090-2

Defining connector connection point using connector connection point command and define the parameters as shown in the image below

Define bundle connection point using bundle connection point command and define the parameters as below.

Hence the connector is defined electrically

clip and connector
Here the connector used is C-1924487-2.1

  • Electrically define connector
  • make connector connection point and bundle point
  • Create cavity point on bottom side of the connect

  • For the clip also make it an equipment and make cavity connection

Make the 2 Part in ELectrical asembly design and connect with Connect electrical device tool

Hence the part is created.

P CLAMP

  • Open the p clamp and make as support definition
  • Define entry and exit plane
  • As well as support plane

4. PLACING ELECTRICALLY DEFINE PART IN ENGINE

The C-1563689-12 connector is widely used in the assembly

Also 8 connector placed in another side

And 4 connector vertically

The 173090-2connector placed in 3 area using manipulation and connection

Clip and connector and placed

Also 3 p clamp are placed accordingly

The channels are also electrically defined and made bundle pint placed both side of the engine

5.Routing the wiring haraness

From the clip and connector throuth thre p clamp first bundle segment is made

Adding branching point in the bumdle segements help to connect to thee connectors

Routing to the plastic guiding channel

7.Checking bundle segment

In this step, first we have to make sure that multi-branchable is selected then we have to go in Edit>Search>Advanced>Workbench-Electrical>Type-Bundle Segment>Attribute-Fully Connected

  • By selecting 'True' option will show all the connected bundle segments while selecting 'False' option will show all the non-connected bundle segments.
  • Here, we have selected for the 'True' option and searched for results. All the bundle segments are highlighted found showing that all the bundle segments are electrically connected as shown in below figure.

8.Adding protective coverings and guiding channels top shell to harness bundle

To protect the bundle protection covering are provided in diameter of 10mm,15mm,20mm

9.creating flatten view of the engine harness geometrical bundle assembly

  • After checking all the bundle segments are linked we need to do the flattening
  • Switch to flattening work bench
  • Select the Harness flattening parameter from the Catia work bench
  • Select the All Tabs and use the setting for our requirement

  • We have extracted the bundle assembly into Engine Harness Flattening Product file and then flattened the file along face of interconnection connector as shown in above figure.
  • At this stage, for clarity, we have been hidden the flattening diagram of the plastic guiding channels from the drawing view

Now we need to fit for the Drawing purpose, if Any changes required using other commands like Rotate, Bend , Roll etc.. Modify the Diagram.

10.CONCLUTION

  • From the above project we learnt how to route wire harness on a V16 Engine.
  • We also learnt about different packaging rules that must be kept in mind during wire routing.
  • We also learnt how to flatten the wire and represent it in the drawing sheet.
  • After finalizing the wire routing, we can request the corresponding Engine design team to provide additional holes for the mounting of Fir tree clips
