Assembly Of American Chopper Model
Objective:
- Design the individual parts of American Chopper using Solidworks
- Assembeling of all parts of the chopper.
- By using Photoview 360 , adding the decals, lights & camera with suitable background envirnoment.
Introduction:
Solidwork is a solid modeling computer adided design (CAD) & computer -adided engineering (CAE) computer program published by Dassault Systems thats runs in primarily on Microsoft Windows.Solidworks currently markets several vessions of solidworks CAD software in addition to e-drawings, a collobaration tool & draft sight, a 2D CAD product etc.In this project we used to create 3D solid model of chopper & Photoview 360 to look photo realistic .
A chopper is a type of a cutom motor cycle which emerged in califonia in the 1950s.The chopper is perhaps the most extreme of all custom styles often using radically modified steering angles & lengthened forles for strectched-out appearance.In this project , we model American Chopper which has basic parts are Engine, Transmission belt, Front & Rear Wheel, Front & Rear Fender, Front fork , Chassis , Kick stand, Pedal, Gas tank , Oil tank & Chain belt.
Design Methodology:
Lets start with explaining the parts of chopper along with tools & feature used.
- Transmission Belt:
Transmission belt in bikes are generally used to offer noise free, smooth transmission for long distance riding.Since comfort, smoothness & less maintenance is more important as compared to performance or fuel efficiency, the belt drive system lends itslef well to the application.It is a loop of flexible material running over the puleeys or sprocket to link two rotating shafts for transmission of lower from engine to gear box.By using 2D sketch such as line , arc & offset tools & features boss-extruded & fillet we create these part.


- Line: Used to draw a line.Types of line are Center Line & Mid-point Line
- Arc:Used to draw an arc. Types of arc are Center point arc,Tangent arc & 3point arc.
- Boss-extruded:Used to create a solid body with the help of sketch.
- Fillet:Use to give smooth face to the sharp edges.
- Smart Dimension:Used to create a dimension,we can add or edit .
- Kickstand:
Kickstand is usually part that touches the ground & allows the bike to stand, a single metallic part.With the help of ellispse , spline , rectangle, circle sketch & Loft, cut-extruded, boss-extruded, split,fllet & Dome feature we create the kickstand.
In these part we learnt , how to create a extra plane to add some tool & feature.


- Ellispse:Used to create a egg shape model or part.Types of ellispse are Partial ellispse,Parabola & Conic.
- Spline:Used to draw a smooth curve through interpolation of points.Types of spline are Style spline,Spline on surface & Equation Driven Curve.
- Rectangle:Used to draw a rectangle.Types are Center Rectangle, Corner Rectangle, 3 Point corner rectange,3 point center rectangle & Parallelogram.
- Circle:Used to draw a circle.Types are Perimeter circle.
- Loft:Taking two or more sketch profile & creating a single part.
- Cut-extruded:Used to cut the some of the parts or model from the body.
- Split:Used to create a multiple bodies from as single body.
- Dome:Used to create diome surfaces on flat surface.
- Front & Rear Fender:
Front fender is located over the front wheel & Rear fender is located over the rear wheel.Fender are used to protect the rider & Pillion/Laggage from the mud, debris, water etc, which are thrwon by the tries while riding.With the help of arc, construction line, spline tools & revolves, split & fillet feature used to create front fender & for rear fender as usally same tools & features used ,but in last we used shell to get convex hollow part.


- Revolve:Used to create a roound body with the help of inter-axises.
- Shell:Used to create a hollow or empty space inside the part or model.
- Oil Tank:
Oil tank is used to store the oil required to engine for smooth working which is just a hollow box.With the help of mid-line, spline sketch & boss-extrude, combine , fillet & shell feature create these part.
First created two different part with different shapes & combine with common part between them.


- Combine:used to create two or more bodies with a single part or model.
- Pedal:
Pedal is used to place the leg on the top of that to give comfort to the rider & used to apply the pressure to brake & changing the gear. First extruded the part with the help of spline, circle & line basic boss part.After that some feature added to the boss part with the help of relvove,Linear pattern & added chamfer,dome , fillet to it.


- Chamfer:To convert sharp edges into bevel edges.
- Pattern:To create a pattern of features,faces & bodies in one or multi direction along a refernces path.Types of pattern are Linear pattern, Circular pattern, Curve driven pattern, Sketch driven pattern & Variable pattern
- Chain:
Chain is type of trnsmission system that is used to transmit a power from the engine to the rear wheel.The sprocket is used to trasnsmit the power to the chain.The sprocket is converted with the shaft with help of key.First the pin & plate should be made & then the path or profile should be made over which the roller & plate link will be patterned the profile is made by various curvature.So as the curvature varies the pattern features is repeated until pattern features check whether the links are properly material at the end.if not , copy & constrain the link berween last & first link.From these part we learnt cicular pattern & mirror.


- Mirror:With the help of reference plane we can mirror the feature or bodies.
- Front & Rear Wheel:
A wheel is a circular part attached to rim and filled with air. And it is made up of a hard and durable material whose center has been bored a hole through which an axle bearing is placed, about which the wheel rotates when torque is applied to the wheel about its axis. Brake pad and caliper are attached to the front and rear wheel. Chain sprocket is attached to rear wheel only. In this project front wheel is smaller than the rear wheel.The front and rear both wheels are made similarly. First the rim and hub is made by using revolve feature and then the webbing of rim is done. After that the brake pad, caliper and sprocket are made by using basic sketch tools and features.




- Front Fork:
Fork holds the front wheel and is fixed to the chassis. The forks can be most easily understood as simply large hydraulic shock absorbers with internal coil springs.They allow the front wheel to react to imperfections in the road while isolating the rest of motorcycle from that motion. American choppers have long forks and at extreme angles.First create a model of fixed rod by using revolved feature. Then model the half of triple tree by extruding and then patterning the counterpart.Then part of the axle is extrude and revolved to model the light. After this the handle is made by sweeping the circular sketch along the projected curve.The grip, brake and brake wire are model similarly with the reference of projected curve. Then mirror it and combine. Then add some extra features like dome, fillet etc.
In these part we learnt , sweep feature & Body-move/copy.


- Sweep:By reference of two sketch , we can creatre a part like rod , pipe which should be in round shape.
- Body-Move/Copy: Used to copy/move the body.
- Chassis:
A motorcycle’s chassis/frame forms its skeleton. Chassis is the most vital part of the vehicle. The strength of the bike is decided by the chassis. It supports the engine,provides a location for the steering and rear suspension and supports the rider and any passenger. And also fuel tank and battery are attached to the frame.The steering head tube is located at the front of the chassis/frame that holds the pivoting front fork, while at the rear there is a pivot point for the suspension motion.Modelling starts from the tubes of chassis. Front side tubes and back side tubes are modeled using projected curve. Then the back side plate is made. Similarly all tubes arecreated then the bottom plates are extruded from one tube to opposite tube. After all this done fillet, chamfer, mirror etc are done for creating final chassis model.
In these part we learnt regarding the curves, we used projected curve.

- Project Curve:From 2D sketch in two different plane , we can create a 3D sketch.
- Engine:
Engine is a powerhouse of vehicle. An engine is a machine designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy.And this energy is transferred to rear wheel through chain and sprocket.The modeling starts with the gear housing and motor housing.This housing is made with the use of basic sketch tools and extrude feature. Then cylinder is made of polygon shape and cuts are made to show fins for cooling.The cylinder is then mirrored. After mirror is done the pipes are made which connects the cylinder using sweep feature. Then the exhaust is made by using projected curve and sweep feature.
In these part we learnt regarding the curves, we used composite curve.

- Composite Curve:Its mainly used to combine to project curve in one sketch.
- Gas Tank:
Gas tank is the fuel tank which stores fuel and it is in complicated shape. And it is a safe container for flammable fluids. As it is at top of the bike it is made stylish withgreat aesthetic look.The start of the modeling is from the basic shape of gas tank which is created using surface sweep and other tools. Then the end of gas tank which is bent in triangular shape is made using projected curve and surface loft. Similarly, the side surface is created using projected curve and surface loft and the seat is created by extruding.Then the bottom surface is created and closed tank is made. Then the cut-out is made for the tube of chassis. Finally the fillet is created to avoid sharp curves and then shelled to create to hollow part inside.
In these part we learnt about surfaces, Surface extrude ,Boundary surface, Surface trim, Surface Loft,Surface sweep & Surface knit.

- Surface Extrude: Similar to boss-extrude , but in these case it will be surface format.
- Boundary Surface:Joining two egdes of the surface & closing it with a new surface.
- Surface Trim:Its act as trim option in surface.
- Surface Sweep:Its act as sweep feature , but in surface case.
- Surface Loft:Joining the two sketch with single surface.
- Surface Knit:Used to combine two surface body with single surface.

Conclusion:
Creating individual part of the chopper , which help to learn almost all the features & tools in Solidworks .And by photoview 360 adding decals, camera, lighting & Render its look realistic.
