Hood design-Week 2
WHAT IS HOOD ?
the hood is an opening body panel that covers the front engine of the vehicle, the hood is aslo consider as another type of door of an vehicle
the hood has two panel called as
1) Hood inner panel &
2)Hood outer panel

and this hood is typically made out of stell alluminum.
the design of Hood Requirements
- Hood inner panel
- Hood outer panel
- Latch and stricker
- Hinges
- Hood balancer is used to support the engine hood of the motor vehicle
Joining Operations of the Hood
After completion of the hood process we have to join the both the panel of hood inner and outer with some joining operations called
- hemming
- spot welding
- Mastic points which we have created in inner pannel
- and revetting
Hood Thickness
- Outer Panel Thickness = 0.75mm
- Inner Panel Thickness = 0.75mm
- Reinforcement Thickness = 1.5mm
Design Hood Factors
Actually the hood is used to cover the engine of the vehicle, so to open the hood we have know certain angle, thats what the engineer thinks
we will consider the maximum height of human in india is 5.5 then we can consider the open angle the hood should be maximum up to certain angle according to the max human height in the india so it is easy to open the hood and no harm or hitting of human head should be occured
- hood opening angle
- Child impact
- Adult impact
- Embosses
- circle trajectory
- Hinge axis
- gas stay
- Support rod
Embosses
The embosses are designed in inner panel of the hood and its should in y and v shaped, so the pressure is distributed towords outside of the vehicle
.
Purpose of Hood Design:
- Save and safety of purposes inside the car.
- Cover all engine parts and radiators.
- Reduce the Air effect due to design aerodynamic shape.
- provide access to the engine for repair and maintenance.
- reduces engine noise, providing you with a quieter drive.
- It can also help keep the paint underhood last longer.
Process
- Acoording to the given master section the hood design process will be goin on.
- To creat inner panel from the given outer panel we should have to creat hinges from the given master section.
- and the hood should be filleted all the edges.
- And later embosses should be created, we can place many embosses at any place of the hood it is up to designers idea but its should be in v and y shaped so the pressure is distrubuted to outside of the vehicle.
- and after we have place mastic points on the embosses.
- After creating the hood outer pannel and now we have to activate assemble of hinge
- we have to draw the axis line in between both the hinges and taking a point as a midpoint of the axis we have to draw a circle trajectory to place a stricker according to the hinges
- And now we have to activate stricker to assemble in inner hood according to the axis of hinges
- After placing all the hinges and stricker in inner hood pannel we have to check weather the thickness is happening or not if it is happening then our inner hood is correct
- all the radius which we have given should be 3*thickness of the sheet or material
- Now we have to work on hemming process, we use this processs to attach the both inner and outer panel of hood
- the thicken value should be given thickness of the panel
