Hood design-Week 2

DESIGN OF HOOD ASSEMBLY

OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to design the hood assembly of the car using NX cad. The parts of the hood assemblys are hood outer surface, hood inner surface, striker, hinges. This design consist of opening angle of the hood and Safety factors.

INTRODUCTION
The hood or bonnet is hinged cover over the engine of a car that allows access to the engine. In this project we have to designing the inner panel, outer panel, striker and hinges are assembled together using NX cad software.

Hood assembly
The hood is a sheet metal assembly consist of various parts such as the Outer panel, Inner panel, Hinge, and Striker.
The hood inner panel for a vehicle is provided to improve rigidity, durability, and pedestrian protecting performance by comprising a composite structure. The outer panel and inner panel are joining together by the hemming operation. A mastic seal is used to reduce vibration between the outer panel and the inner panel.
The latch and striker are primarily responsible for locking hood assembly to the engine compartment.
A hood hinge mechanism includes upper and lowers brackets interconnected by pivoted links. The helps to move together as the hood assembly moves between closed and partially open positions.

Design inputs
Hood thickness information
Outer panel thickness = 0.75mm
Inner panel thickness = 0.75mm
Reinforcement thickness = 1.5mm

Creating the hood inner panel using the master section.

Creating embossing on hood inner panel to dissipate the crash force towards the hinge.

Assemblying the hinge and striker on inner panel by providing appropriate emboss.

Applying Mastic points to the hood inner panel.

Mastic is rubber like material, which is used to reduce vibration and noise. The mastics having diameter of 60 to 80mm.

Applying Hemming the hood outer panel maintaining gap as per master sketch.
Hemming is the process of joining hood inner panel and outer panel. Set of rollers roll the hood outer panel to get hemming surface. The gap between hood outer panel and inner panel is filled with sealants to make joint waterproof.

Applying reliefs at the corners to reduce stress concentration.

CONCLUSION

Thus the hood assembly is completed designed as per the design inputs using NX Cad.
