DESIGNING AN AMERICAN CHOPPER USING SOLIDWORKS

INTRODUCTION
This report contains an explanation for designing an American chopper using solidwork software. This helps to know how to use the basic tool, 3D modeling, Assembling, and Rendering in Solidworks

OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this course is to learn 3D modeling, and also exploring most of the basic tools, Assembling, and rendering of the models.

The following steps were undertaking while designing an American chopper

  1. Designing 3D model of each parts
  2. Assembling the model
  3. Decals, Background, lights, and camera
  4. Final rendering of an American chopper

Methodology

Main components of an American chopper

  1. Transmission belt
  2. Kick stand
  3. Chain
  4. Rear fender
  5. Rear wheel
  6. Pedal
  7. Front fender
  8. Front wheel
  9. Oil tank
  10. Front fork
  11. Chassis
  12. Engine
  13. Fuel tank

Transmission belt
Belts are mechanical elements used for power transmission between two shafts
Features used

  • Boss extrude
  • Fillet

Kick stand
A kickstand is a device on a bicycle or motorcycle that allows the bike to be kept upright without leaning against another object or the aid of a person. A kickstand is usually a piece of metal that flips down from the frame and makes contact with the ground.
Features used

  • Loft
  • Dome
  • Cut extrude
  • Split
  • Boss extrude
  • Fillet

Chain
It is most commonly used for the transmission of mechanical power on many kinds of domestic, industrial, and agricultural machinery, including conveyors, cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. It consists of a series of short cylindrical rollers held together by side links. It is driven by a toothed wheel called a sprocket. It is a simple, reliable, and efficient means of power transmission.
Features used

  • Boss extrude
  • Fillet
  • Projected curves
  • Cruve pattern
  • Mirror

Rear fender
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle, or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other roads spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
Features used

  • Revolved boss
  • Split
  • Fillet
  • Shell

Rear wheel
A circular object that revolves on an axle and is fixed below a vehicle or other object to enable it to move easily over the ground.
Features used

  • Boss extrude
  • Cut extrude
  • Revolved cut
  • Circular pattern
  • Combine
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer

Pedal
Pedal has the function of shifting the gears to get the desired the speed from the engine and also applying the braking force.
Features used

  • Boss extrude
  • Fillet
  • Revolved boss
  • Dome
  • Chamfer
  • Linear pattern

Front fender
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle, or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other roads spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
Features used

  • Revolved boss
  • Split
  • Fillet

Front wheel
A circular object that revolves on an axle and is fixed below a vehicle or other object to enable it to move easily over the ground.
Features used

  • Boss extrude
  • Cut extrude
  • Revolved cut
  • Circular pattern
  • Combine
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer

Oil tank
The oil tank has the purpose of storing lube oil to lubricate the engine parts to avoid wear and tear due to extreme heat.
Features used

  • Boss extrude
  • Fillet
  • Shell
  • Combine

Front fork
A bicycle fork is the part of a bicycle that holds the front wheel. A fork typically consists of two blades which are joined at the top by a fork crown.
Features used

  • Boss extrude
  • Revolved boss
  • Fillet
  • Extruded cut
  • Dome
  • Revolved cut
  • Swept boss
  • Project curve
  • Mirror
  • Combine

Chassis
Chassis is the main support structure of the vehicle which is also known as ‘Frame’. It bears all the stresses on the vehicle in both static and dynamic conditions. In a vehicle, it is analogous to the skeleton in living organisms.
Features used

  • Swept boss
  • Project curve
  • Mirror
  • Extruded boss
  • Fillet
  • Extruded cut
  • Dome
  • Combine
  • Chamfer
  • Split
  • Revolved boss

Engine
An engine or motor is a machine designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy. Heat engines convert heat into work via various thermodynamic processes.
Features used

  • Swept boss
  • Project curve
  • Mirror
  • Extruded boss
  • Fillet
  • Extruded cut
  • Dome
  • Chamfer
  • Split
  • Revolved boss
  • Linear pattern
  • Circular pattern
  • Composite curve

Fuel tank
A fuel tank is a safe container for flammable fluids. Though any storage tank for fuel may be so called, the term is typically applied to part of an engine system in which the fuel is stored and propelled (fuel pump) or released (pressurized gas) into an engine
Features used

  • Surface loft
  • Surface knit
  • Project curve
  • Fillet
  • Swept surface
  • Split
  • Mirror
  • Swept cut
  • Plane

Assembly of American Chopper
All the designed parts are taken into the assembly section in SolidWorks and using different mating features such as concentric, coincident, parallel, tangent and distance, etc. the entire assembly of the American chopper

After the assembly next applying the decals, camera, external lightings, and background scenes through photoview 360, and rendering is done through SolidWorks visualize

Assembly

Rendering

conclusion

  • The parts of the American chopper are modeled.
  • The parts were mated and assembled.
  • The photo-realistic image was rendered with the help of photo view 360 and Solidworks visualize.
