Design of an Automobile Hood
HOOD DESIGN
OBJECTIVES
- To design hood outer panel, inner panel and the necessary reinforcements by following the Master section.
- To assemble the parts designed.
INTRODUCTION
In this project, the detailed model of the hood of an automobile is designed on Siemens NX. The hood is an important part of the automobile which provides safety to the passengers, pedestrians and the engine compartment in case of a crash.
The hood has three major components :-
- Outer Panel :- It is the aethetic component of the hood and also provides extra support to the inner panel.
- Inner Panel :- It is the component which functions in taking the forces away from the passengers, pedestrians on engine compartment in case of a frontal crash.
- Reinforcements :- These are components which provide extra strength in regions where the hinges and the latch are placed.
DESIGN METHODOLOGY

DESCRIPTIONS
- Latch Trajectory :- It is the path of the striker when the hood is being opened or closed. The dotted blue circle is the latch trajectory, and the dotted red line show the tangential direction of the striker.

- Mastic Points :- The points where mastics are applied to attach the inner and outer panels together.

- Emboss Definitions :- The varius embosses given to reduce the damage caused in the event of a crash. These embosses lead to the hood absorbing the forces and crumbling withut transferring the forces.

- Reinforcements :- Provided to add strength where other components are attached.

MANUFACTURING PROCESSES
Deep drawing is a sheet metal forming process in which a sheet metal blank is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch. A flat sheet metal blank is formed into a hollow body open on one side under a combination of tensile and compressive conditions. It is a shape transformation process with material retention. This is achieved by redrawing the part through a series of dies.
Hemming is a forming operation in which the edges of the sheet are folded or folded over another part in order to achieve a tight fit. Normally hemming operations are used to connect parts together, to improve the appearance of a part and to reinforce part edges.
