Hood design-Week 2

DESIGN OF HOOD IN NX CAD

HOOD :

Hood is a Cover that rest over the Engine Bay in the front side of the Vehicle. It gives access to the engine area by opening and closing it. It consists of Outer panel and Inner Panel with Latch and Striker & Hinges.

INNER PANEL :

Inner Panel is the Supporting for Outer Panel which has Emboss with Holes and Mastic Points for Joining process.

Input Data is given and It is taken from the outer panel using Linked Face . and Tooling Axis is First Created .

Flanges are created using Given Master section , with operations such as offset face , offset curve in face , Trim sheet , Through curves and Face Blend in NX CAD.

Emboss :

They are projections made on sheet metal , This operation is carried out for stiffening the surface. The function of embossing is to dissipiate the force acting on the hood during collision. This is used to reduce the impact for the persons sitting on front seats of a car.

Mastic Points :

Mastic points are areas in inner panel where it is joined with outer panel using mastic sealant.

As next step Hinge mounting is created and Hinge axis is created using reference of Hinge data given . In same way Latch and Striker mounting and Latch and striker Trajectory axis also created by getting it from ref data given.

THICKENED INNER PANEL :

Finally inner panel is thickened to 0.75 mm as given .

Latch and Striker :

It is used for locking the Hood of the car . It is attached in the area of inner panel where the mounting created . Trajectory path is created towards the Perpendicular of hinge axis. This is designed for easy locking and unlocking of Hood.

Hinge :

Hinge data is given . Hinge is Located in hinge mounting created in the inner panel. And it is mirrored. Finally Hinge axis is created by taking points on the Hinges on either sides.

HOOD OUTER PANEL :

Outer Panel is the outer cover of the hood which is the styling surface.

Input Skin data is given and that is made ready for Hemming Process by using following operations such as Trim Sheet , Bridge curve, offset surface, offset curve in face , Face Blend , Law Extension , Mirror Geomentry , Sew and Finally Thickened using NX CAD .

Hemming Relief :

It is Provided at the corner for reducing spring back effect. i.e : not affecting the dimensional stability of the finished Part.

HEMMING :

Hemming is the forming Process in which the edges of the sheet metal are folded over another part in order to achieve a tight fit. Hemming Operations are normally used to connect parts and reinforce part edges.

DEEP DRAWING PROCESS :

Deep Drawing is the Sheet Metal forming process in which sheet metal is radially drawn into a forming die by mechanical action of punch. It is called DEEP DRAWING because depth of the drawn part Exceeds it diameter. h> d/2.
