Hood design-Week 2

HOOD DESIGN :

Software Used : Siemens NX 12

BIW Concept :

Body in white (BIW) is the stage in automobile manufacturing in which a car body's frame has been joined together, that is before painting and before the motor, chassis sub-assemblies, or trim (glass, door locks/handles, seats, upholstery, electronics, etc.) have been integrated into the structure.

Sub-assemblies like Under body, Body side Left Hand Side/ Right Hand Side, Front End, Roof etc. gets welded together by various metal joining process e.g. resistance spot welding, Laser welding, MIG welding to make welded metal shell (Without Door, Trunk-lid / Tailgate) , Fender, Bonnet Center) called Body in White. Automotive car shell made before painting is called Body in White.BIW joinery decides the exterior and interior look of any car. All the Interior Parts(Commonly used in Automotive) e.g. Dashboard, Trim (Door Trim, Pillar Trims, Roof liner, Seats are mounted on the BIW shell with the help of various brackets or nuts mounted on the BIW.

Hood :

A car hood, is the hinged cover that rests over the engine bay of a front-engine vehicle. The car hood protects the engine and connected parts from the elements while providing easy access for repairs and maintenance.

Hood Components:

Inner Panel -

This pannel supports outer pannel, Provides strength to outer pannel. All the inner componets is join to inner panel.

Outer Panel - This is A1 Surface of Automobile which gives good aerodynamics to vehicle.

Hinge Assembly - Opening and closing is possible due to hinge assembly.

Latch - Latch is attached to inner panel which lock the moment of hood.

Sheet Metal Operations:

EMBOSSING :

Sheet metal embossing is a stamping process for producing raised or sunken designs or relief in sheet metal. This process can be made by means of matched male and female roller dies, or by passing sheet or a strip of metal between rolls of the desired pattern.

Deep Drawing :

Deep drawing, is a sheet metal forming process in which a sheet metal blank is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch. It is thus a shape transformation process with material retention.

Punching And Blanking :

Punching or blanking is a process in which the punch removes a portion of material from the larger piece or a strip of sheet metal. If the small removed piece is discarded, the operation is called punching, whereas if the small removed piece is the useful part and the rest is scrap, the operation is called blanking.

While Designing the hood, Followings need to be consider,

  • Styling
  • Occupant Safety
  • Manufacturibility
  • Opening angle of Hood
  • N CAP crash Test
  • Pedestrian Safety
  • NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness)
  • Wrap Around Distance (WAD)

Conclusion :

In This challenge, I came to know various commands in NX 12 and various operations performed on the sheet metals. Also got know the BIW concept and defferent parts of BIW. Finally able to design the hood.
