Hood design-Week 2
AIM: To design Hood Outer Panel, Inner Panel and the necessary reinforcements by following the Master Section mentioned with the design parameters.
INTRODUCTION:
Hood- The hood or bonnet is the hinged cover over the engine of the vehicle. Hoods can open to allow access to the engine compartment, or trunk on rear-engine and some mid-engine vehicles) for maintenance and repair.
A car hood is meant to protect the performance parts of your vehicle, including the engine, while also providing easy access for repairs and maintenance. It is possible for the hood to incur damage as well. One of the most common types of damage is to the hinge, which is the device that connects the hood to the body of the vehicle. Over time, the hinge can become loose or may fall off completely. The hood is also prone to receiving scratches and dents. Although this might appear to be a minor problem, dents and scratches can lead to depreciation in the value of your vehicle. Scratches and dents can also lead to exposure to the elements that can result in rust and corrosion. This can be a serious problem that can ultimately expose the engine in your car to snow, sunlight, and rain. When this happens, it can impact the performance of your car's engine.

Material- Hoods are typically made of the same materials as the rest of the bodywork. This may include steel, aluminum, fiberglass, or carbon fiber. However, some aftermarket companies produce replacements for steel hoods in fiberglass or carbon fiber to make the vehicle lighter.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR HOOD:
Before we dive into the design, let us understand the rules and regulation standards for designing the hood.
- A perfect hood design means it should have a great impact distribution angled outside the car.
- In Japan and Europe, regulations have come into effect that places a limit on the severity of pedestrian head injury when struck by a motor vehicle. This is leading to more advanced hood designs, as evidenced by multicore hood inner panel designs.
- European Enhanced Vehicle-Safety Committee (EEVC), European New Car Assessment Program (euro NCAP).
Head clearance zone - Head clearance zone is the clearance such that when the hood is in fully open condition it does not hurt the head of the person that is standing next to the hood . this is controlled by the opening angle of the hood . the opening angle of the hood is decided for the region the car is manufactured . some region may have people with average height of 5.5 ft and another region may have people with average height of 6 ft . so deciding the right opening angle for the hood is an important criteria. .

Pedestrian Safety- A pedestrian can be defined as a vulnerable road user that is at risk when it comes to roads. Thus the safety of such being is essential. The pedestrian safety and protection norms are aimed to do so. It will ensure that the new cars meet a minimum requirement of safety for the pedestrians.
Euro NCAP Standards followed- We design the hood panel for the safety of the passengers inside the cars but at the same time, we have to protect the pedestrian walking on the road. This is what improves the standard and quality of the car. Whenever the car hits a pedestrian it should cause minimum damage to the pedestrian. For this, we have to remove material from the inner panel at specific portions.
- India, however, ranks 1 in the number of road accident deaths across the 199 countries reported in the World Road Statistics, 2018 followed by China and the US. As per the WHO Global Report on Road Safety 2018, India accounts for almost 11% of the accident-related deaths in the World.
- Road transport remains the most favored mode of transport for both freight and passenger movement in India. The fast-growing population, exceptional rate of motorization coupled with the ever-growing urbanization has made people vulnerable to frequent road accidents resulting in fatalities, injuries/disabilities.
- the sequence of injuries and events in a pedestrian collision images are mentioned below.
Collision of Car and Pedestrian-

Impact Zones for Child and Adult-

Consideration of Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH)- NVH plays an important role in car design. The noise and vibration produced by the car should be minimized. in the hood , to avoid vibrations stiffner pads are provided. mastic sealants also reduce the nvh . stiffnerpads and mastic are added between inner and outer panel of the hood.
Wrap Around Distance - When a car crashes on the pedestrian, the whole human body wraps around the front shape of the car and the head impacts on the bonnet or the windscreen. The distance on which the head impacts on the car from the ground is called as the Wrap Around Distance (WAD).
To be specific the Wrap Around Distance is a measurement of distance from the ground to the head impact zone over the outer surface of the car. The wrap around distance is measured longitudinally in the centre of the vehicle from the ground.

The severity of the injury caused by the frontal crash depends on the type and shape of the vehicle, speed of the vehicle and the movement of the pedestrian relative to the vehicle. In addition to these parameters, the wrap around distance plays a major role in the safety measurement of a pedestrian.
During the crash analysis, based on the Wrap Around Distance (WAD), two test areas will be created namely Child head impact zone and the Adult head impact zone. The child head impact zone is between 1000 to 1700 mm WAD and the adult head impact zone ranges between 1700 to 2100 mm WAD.

COMPONENTS OF HOOD:
Hood Outer Panel - The outer panel is actually called the skin of the vehicle which is designed by the styling team to get a good look for a vehicle by covering the inner panel and engine parts of the car. This part should not be welded to the inner panel but using the sealant and mastic points makes contact between the inner and outer panel which acts as a bond between both and makes the hood stiff.

Hood Inner Panel- The main part of the hood which gives support to the outer panel of the car and with its embossing shapes dissipates the force in different directions when the vehicle takes crashes to not to injure the men in the car.

Striker - Door strikers are hooks or bolts that latch up the doors on a vehicle. The striker is designed to create a tight fit between the door and the seal on the cab. The striker plate is made of hardened metal that prevents wear when the door is open and shut many times each day.
When tension is applied to the cable from the hood release handle, it pivots the secondary latch, which pulls away from a retaining seat located under the hood. By design, the secondary latch then releases the hood a few inches before a safety latch takes over.

Hinges - The hinge consists of two parts- hinge at the inner panel and hinge at the engine compartment. This coupling allows the hood to open and close, as well as makes contact between the engine block to the hood. It also controls the lifting of the bonnet mitigates the consequences of a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle.

TYPES OF HOOD SUPPORT:
Gas Stay - These are used to lift the car hood. Its purpose to just give the lifting force to the hood, then it automatically opens the car hood by means of gas pressure. This is used where the car bonnet size is heavy to lift. Spring stays are designed to be used on upward lifting doors, once you have opened the door slightly the spring will push the door to the fully open position. Struts contain nitrogen gas under pressure and some oil to damp movement and to lubricate the seals.

Support rod - This is widely used in many cars as the rate is cheap. In this type we have to lift the hood by ourselves and place the support rod in the space provided either in the hood or engine component. This is mostly used for where the car bonnet weight is small. Support Rod can be mounted with grommet side on the engine compartment of body and rod locking hole on hood or vice versa. Grommet and the clip of the rod are standard parts. Support rod is used to increase the support force, automatic buffering, stable and reliable, strong load-bearing capacity, safe use, not easy to fall, avoid hot hands, support the engine more easily, and balance the force without shaking.

PROCEDURE FOR DESIGNING HOOD:
For designing the hood or bonnet, master section and class A surface has been given for the reference.
MASTER SECTION: Master sections are the guides for design requirements which decide the component packaging after technical (Styling, Concept or Class-A) surfaces.

Hood Inner Panel-
- The hood inner panel is required to have a high initial reaction force against the impact exerted on the hood to enhance the energy absorption capacity. The hood is further required to minimize a reduction of a reaction force by deformation in a collision.
- It is an object of the present invention to provide a hood inner panel capable of reduction of a reaction force of the hood inner panel even if a level of deformation of a hood of a vehicle increases, and ensuring a sufficient energy absorption capacity.
- In the inner panel only we can research and implement the safety of pedestrians and as well as the driver.in this panel only we can attach the reinforcement, embossed, mastic points, etc.

Emboss- Embosses has been given to create extra strength in inner panel and embosses design needs to be inspired by force dissipation phenomena like here I have made embosses in a way if any object hit from front most of the force will get dissipated by its design towards the upper left & right corner so that less force reach at occupants end.
- The metal sheet embossing operation is commonly accomplished with a combination of heat and pressure on the sheet metal, depending on what type of embossing is required. Theoretically, with any of these procedures, the metal thickness is changed in its composition.
- A metal sheet is drawn through the male and female roller dies, producing a pattern or design on the metal sheet. Depending on the roller dies used, different patterns can be produced on the metal sheet. The pressure and a combination of heat actually "irons" while raising the level of the image higher than the substrate to make it smooth. The term "impressing" refers to an image lowered into the surface of a material, in distinction to an image raised out of the surface of a material.

Deep Drawing - Deep drawing is a sheet metal forming process in which a sheet metal blank is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch. It is thus a shape transformation process with material retention. The process is considered "deep" drawing when the depth of the drawn part exceeds its diameter.

- Deep drawing is a manufacturing process that is used extensively in the forming of sheet metal into a cup or box-like structures. Pots and pans for cooking, containers, sinks, automobile parts, such as panels and gas tanks, are among a few of the items manufactured by sheet metal deep drawing.
-
A deep drawing of sheet metal is performed with a punch and die. The punch is the desired shape of the base of the part, once drawn. The die cavity matches the punch and is a little wider to allow for its passage, as well as clearance. For many calculations, the sheet metal thickness is assumed to remain constant. However, there are changes in thickness in certain areas, due to the forces involved.

Hemming - Hemming is a sheet metal forming process in which sheets are joined by bending it usually to 180°. Automotive body panels and automotive parts such as deck-lids, trunk-lids, doors, hoods, and tailgates are formed by hemming processes.
-
Conventional die hemming is suitable for mass production. In die hemming, the flange is folded over the entire length with a hemming tool. Normally the actual hemming is a result of a forming operation in which the flange is formed with a hemming tool after the drawing and trimming operations have been completed
- Roll hemming is carried out incrementally with a hemming roller. An industrial robot guides the hemming roller and forms the flange. Roll hemming operation can also be divided into several pre-hemming and final hemming process steps.
- If weld or bolts were used to join the hood panels then the design and the aerodynamic features would get damaged so hemming is more significant to use.

While doing the hemming process, A relief angle is formed as a product of hem when attaining at the corner of the sheet metals.

Mastic data - A mastic sealant data is used to fix or combine the hood outer panel and hood inner panel.
- They can provide thermal and acoustical insulation, and may serve as fire barriers. They may have electrical properties, as well. Sealants can also be used for simple smoothing or filling. They are often called upon to perform several of these functions at once.
- A sealant has three basic functions: It fills a gap between two or more substrates; it forms a barrier through the physical properties of the sealant itself and by adhesion to the substrate; and, it maintains sealing properties for the expected lifetime, service conditions, and environments. The sealant performs these functions by way of correct formulation to achieve specific application and performance properties.

Latch Trajectory - The latch trajectory shows the path of the striker when the hood is opened and closed on a vehicle. The radius of the circular trajectory is determined by the set standard based on the average height of a person. The radius is measured from the hinge axis up-to the latch.

Fixing the Hinge Axis - The hinge axis is positioned in such a way that the axis lies in the same line so that it is parallel to the “x” axis plane. This is done in order to position the latch and sticker trajectory motions exactly perpendicular to the hinge axis.

Reinforcements - The area near hinge and latch has more chances of failure in the hood panel. Hence to avoid any failure, the hinge and latch areas are reinforced with extra material whose thickness is usually determined by the type of vehicle.

Dissipating Shock Waves - To dissipate the shock waves on to the sides of the hood. This is a major reason for designing the hood in the shape of “Y” or “V” to dissipate the forces on the sides. This is one of the primary reasons for designing it in such a way that the force is not carried on to the passengers inside so that the passengers are saved from possible damage. In this design it is found that the embosses are designed such that it forms the shape of “Y”.

CONCLUSION :
Thus, we have successfully design the hood inner panel from the given class A surface and then assemble all the parts i.e., latch, inner and outer panel & hinges by considering all the given dimension.
