Frequency Analysis of a rotating shaft

Frequency Analysis of a rotating shaft

Aim:- To find out the critical frequencies of a rotating shaft in Solidworks.

Objectives:

  • design a model of the rotating shaft and conduct frequency analysis.
  • To find out the 5 mode shapes & list the frequencies.

Introduction :

rotating shaft - A revolving rod that transmits power or motion. A shaft is a rotating machine element, usually circular in cross-section, which is used to transmit power from one part to another, or from the machine which produces power to a machine that absorbs power.

Frequency analysis

excessive vibration in the machine shaft causes catastrophic failure of machine parts. vibration in machine parts increases due to crack generation in the machine shaft. dynamic properties of rotor shaft such as natural frequency of vibration. critical speed gets altered due to change in crack depth & crack location. A critical frequency is the theoretical angular velocity that excites the natural frequency of a rotating shaft. a speed of rotation approaches the object's natural frequency, the object beings to resonate which dramatically increases system vibration.

Theory :

Design a model - Rotating shaft

  • after the design model of the rotating shaft apply a bearing fixture on the stepped face of the rod at the two ends and perform the analysis.

  • apply mesh to created model.

  • Run the simulation.

Result & conclusion:

list of resonant frequency

Mode No. Frequency(Rad/sec) Frequency(Hertz) Period(Seconds)
1 0 0 1e+32
2 1062.6 169.12 0.005913
3 1062.6 169.13 0.0059128
4 5035.2 801.38 0.0012478
5 5035.4 801.4

0.0012478

  • from the result, we can conclude that the shaft is safe to use.
  • The frequency is directly proportional to amplitude.
  • a speed of rotation approaches the object's natural frequency, the object beings to resonate which dramatically increases system vibration.
