Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Title- Design Of Fender Wheel Arch

Objective- To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

The part file of Wheel Arch given to us-

Fig 1: Fender Wheel Arch

Introduction to Fender wheel Arch-

The wheel arch is the semicircular portion of the fender that is over the car's wheel. The wheel arch of the fender should be constructed in such a way that it screen the wheels and give shielding both the passenger compartment and pedestrians from flying water, dirt, and stones. To prevent debris or stones, dirt, sand, snow, etc. from getting flung into the vehicle or the BIW area, as well as outside the vehicle and onto other vehicles or pedestrians on the road, the wheel arch region of the fender is typically built as a cover or shield over the tyre along its perimeter.

The wheel arch and fenders of the vehicle must be designed in such a way that it meet the criteria and requirements established by the respective countries in order for it to be licenced in those countries.

Discussion on European Standards-

Fig 2: European Standards

Some steps to be taken while creating the sketch for european standards-

  • First draw a horizontal and vertical axis from the centre of the wheel.
  • The intersection point of vertical axis with fender wheel arch is labelled as A.
  • Similar references should be given on left at 30 degrees and on right at 50 degree to the and named them as B and C respectively.
  • Point D is obtained by drawing a line of 150 mm in length perpendicular to the horizontal axis and normal from the normal point on the fender.
  • A new section E is created at the centre of the arc that is formed by sections C and D.
  • The value of clearance length 'L' at each section to be find out to detrmine whether the fender satisfies the european standards as shown below.

Fig 3: Sketch for measurement

Fig 4: Sketch drawn along with dimensions

Measurement of clearance value (L) at different ssections

  1. On Measuring the value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at section B- The value of 'L' at section B is 10.0000mm

2. On Measuring the value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at section A- The value of 'L' at section A is 9.9489mm.

3. On Measuring the value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at section C- The value of 'L' at section C is 0.112764 mm.

4. On Measuring the value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at section E- The value of 'L' at section E is 2.8466 mm.

5. On Measuring the value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at section D- The value of 'L' at section D is 5.9754 mm.

Table representing the resuts:-

CONCLUSION: From the above results we can conclude that the fender fails as per the European regulations, becaues the minimum clearance (L) between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
