Benchmarking

Benchmarking is the process of comparing a company's performance to that of another regarded as the "best in class" in the industry for its products, services, or processes. The benchmarking is used to find internal improvement opportunities. By studying companies with superior performances, breaking the code what makes such performance possible by them, and then comparing those processes or techniques to how your business operates, by implementing the techniques or processes after all comparisons results in the yielding of significant improvements.

That might mean tweaking a product’s features to more closely match a competitor’s offering, or changing the scope of services you offer, or installing a new customer relationship management (CRM) system to enable more personalized communications with customers.

Continuous and dramatic improvement opportunities are the two main categories. Continuous improvement is incremental, requiring only minor changes to yield significant gains while in dramatic improvements the only way to get the significant output is to reengineer the entire internal work process.

Step-by-Step Benchmarking is five-step process that involves:

  1. Pick an internal division, service, or product to benchmark.
  2. Select the best-in-class companies to benchmark against and to which businesses you should compare your operation.
  3. Compile data on their internal performances.
  4. Compare the data from the two organisations to find performance gaps at your business.
  5. Adopt the processes, techniques and guidelines used by the top performers.

Benefits of Benchmarking

  1. 1. Gain an independent perspective about how well you perform compared to other companies
  2. Analyse performance gaps to find out the areas that need improvement.
  3. Develop a standardized set of procedures and processes.
  4. Encourage a culture and mindset of constant improvement.
  5. Specify performance goals.
  6. Monitoring the company performance and manage changes accordingly.
