Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM: To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

WHEEL ARCH:

The Wheel arch is the semicircular part that is positioned above the wheel of the vehicle. It is designed in such a way that it protects both the pedestrains adn the lower portion of the vehicle from the chips,mud,etc..

To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap from the fender we are following some regulations that are followed in the oem's.Every region has different regulations for fender wheel arch design that are followed in the oem's.some of the regulations are

1.JAPAN REGULATIONS:

  • We need to masure the clearance "L" for the tire, hub, cap & fender in area K and to create a clearance check chart table to validate.
  • The value of 'L' should be greater than 5mm in all teh three positions.
  • Wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" should be more than 5mm at line 30deg forward and 50deg rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

2.EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:

  • The clearance value "L" should be measured at the sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE and to create a clearance check chart table to validate.
  • At all the five sections the value of L should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European Regulations.
  • Wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" should be more than 5mm at line 30degforward and 50deg rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

3. US REGULATIONS:

  • The Clearance value "L" is to be checked in all the positions from -100deg to 100deg and to create a clearance check chart table to validate.
  • The value of 'L' should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.
  • Wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" should be more than 5mm at line 30deg forward and 50deg rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

Calculations of wheel Arch area - EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:

At first we need to create a datum plane with reference to the wheel front surface and create a sketch and project the fender and the wheel for creating the intersecting points in oder to calculate,as per the regulations which is shown in the fig

For our understandings we can give the text for all the 5 section as SA,SB,SC,SD,SE .

  • The Measuring Clearance value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at SA(center line)- 10.0000 mm.

  • The Measuring Clearance value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at SB(30 deg from center line)- 9.9490 mm.

  • The Measuring Clearance value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at SC(50 deg from center ine)- 0.113949 mm.

  • The Measuring Clearance value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at SD(mid point blw SC & SE)- 2.8875 mm.

  • The Measuring Clearance value of 'L' for the given wheel and fender at SE(Point on curve which is 150mm above the horizontal line)- 5.9973 mm

as per the regulations we need to calculate the 'a' value which is 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the center line.

  • The Measuring Clearance value of 'a' for the given wheel and fender at SB(30 deg foward)- 44.7577 mm

  • The Measuring Clearance value of 'a' for the given wheel and fender at Sc(50 deg rearward)- 38.359 mm

clearance check chart

The values at the sections SC,SD,SE are taken as negative values since the wheel is outside of the fender boundary.

SECTION CLEARANCE VALUE "L" >10 mm RESULT CLEARANCE VLAUE "a" >5 mm RESULT
SA-SA 10.0000 mm PASS
SB-SB 9.9490 mm FAIL 44.7577 mm PASS
SC-SC -0.113949 mm FAIL 38.359 mm PASS
SD-SD -2.8875 mm FAIL
SE-SE -5.9973 mm FAIL

CONCULSION :

From the above tabular results we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulations as all the sections don't have the CL 'L' value at least 10mm, only the section SA is seen to have value 10mm.As the desifndoes not meet with the European regulations this is going to be rejected.
