Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
AIM : To calculate the Wheel Arc area for given FENDER model and check the elligibility criteria whether the Car will pass the European Standards or not.
FENDER
- Fender is the part of Automoble/Vehicle body that frames the wheel properly with some measurements.
- Its basic purpose is to prevent sand, dirt, rocks and other road-side particles from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyres.
- Fenders are typically rigid and strong to protect the wheel as shield.

WHEEL ARCH
- It is the curved part of the FENDER positioned right above the wheel.
- The Wheel Arch is designed im such a way that it protects the padestrian and car cabin from mud, stones, water rocks.
- Different countries have different Wheel Arch regulation.
FENDER Wheel Arch Regulation
JAPANESE Standards

as per Japanese standard,
- the Clearance value (L) / Wheel Arch Gap ie, gap between the Tyre and Fender Wheel Arch should not be less than 5 mm for all the three points A,B,C .
US Standards

as per US Standard,
- The clearance check is done at all position from -10 degree to 180 degree.
- The clearance value must be more than 5mm at line 30 degree forward & 50 degree backward from central vertical axis.
- The Clearance value (L) should not be less than 5mm at every 10 degree angle.
EUROPEAN Standards

as per EUROPEAN standard,
- The clearance (L) should not be less than 10mm at all the five points SA, SB, SC, SD, SE .
PROCEDURE
given FENDER model

- Create Datum plane by using "curve and points".
- by using the datum plane, create sketch according to EUROPEAN Standards : SA, SB, SC, SD, SE
- for line SE, offset a line at 150mm & use "Derived Lines" between SC & SE to get SD line.
- Measure the Clearance (L) between the Tyre & Fender by using "measure distance"

CLEARANCE (L)
| SA | 9.948 mm | FAIL |
| SB | 10 mm | PASS |
| SC | 0.112 mm | FAIL |
| SD | 2.846 mm | FAIL |
| SE | 5.9018 mm | FAIL |
(for EUROPEAN standard, the minimum Clearance should be 10 mm )
CONCLUSION
Only the line SB which has value 10 mm, satify the EUROPEAN standard whereas the other lines doesn't.
Hence, we have to discuss with the Stylling team and give our data to change/modify the stylling of FENDER to satisfy/pass overall EUROPEAN standards.
