Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM:-

Study the Wheel Arch area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or not using European regulations.

OBJECTIVE:-

Calculate the Wheel Arc area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or not using European standards.

INTRODUCTION:-

The wheel arch is the area where the wheel is covered by the fender so it prevents chipping of the car from the stones. It should have sufficient clearance between the wheel and wheel arch area so that it does not touch the wheel arch area.

There are 3 types of standards for wheel arch calculation

  • European standard
  • Japanese standard
  • US standard

European standard

In European standards, we have to first make a line parallel to the 0Y direction. Then create 30 and 50-degree lines from the 0Y line. Now from the 0X axis take a 150 mm distance and create a point on the wheel arch. Then create a line from the center of the wheel to the point. Then bisect both the line SC and SE is considered to give out the section SD. Finally, calculate the clearance between the 30 degrees line and the wheel arch which must be 10 mm apart.

Japanese standard

In Japanese standards, we have to first make a line parallel to the 0Y direction. Then create 30 and 50-degree lines from the 0Y line. Finally, calculate the clearance between the 30 degrees line and the wheel arch which must be 5 mm apart.

US standard:-

In US standard line is drawn from the center of the wheel for energy 10 degrees from the -20 to 180 degrees as in the picture given below. SO as per US standard, the clearance gap distance between the wheel and the fender wheel arch area should not be less than 5 mm at every 10 degree angle.

PROCEDURE

  • First, the sketches were made from the center of the wheel.

  • Then the clearance value is measured and found to be.

SB-SB 10mm, SA-SA 10mm, SC-SC 0.114mm, SD-SD 2.879mm, SE-SE 5.975mm

When the value was compared with the European standard the result was achieved.

Section Measured clearance"L"(mm) Remark

SB-SB 10 Pass

SA-SA 10 Pass

SC-SC 0.114 Fail

SD-SD 2.879 Fail

SE-SE 5.975 Fail

CONCLUSION:-

Only the line Sa and SB is greater than 10mm clearance between the wheel arch area and wheel but in the remaining 4 positions, it is less than 10mm clearance which is not acceptable. Hence the design of fender has to be modified to pass the European standard.
