Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER DESIGN – WHEEL ARCH CHALLENGE
Objective
Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
Introduction
Wheel arch is also known as Wheel well. The wheel arch is the semi-circular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. Wheel arch is a part of fender and Curvature in shape. While designing Wheel arch it should be in mind that the wheel should be inside the fender.
As we see car from front if wheel is outside the fender, then it causes lot of damage to pedestrian and also to the car so wheel should be under the fender.

Clearance value differs in different region according to their road conditions. Some of them are:
Japanese Standard :
- Clearance must be greater than 5mm all three position.
- Wheel guard require the value of 'a' shall be 5mm and line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward form the central vertical axis of the wheel.

European Standard :
- Clearance must be greater than 10mm all three position.
- Wheel guard require the value of 'a' shall be 10mm and line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward form the central vertical axis of the wheel.

United States Standard :
- Clearance must be greater than 5mm all three position.
- Wheel guard require the value of 'a' shall be 5mm and line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward form the central vertical axis of the wheel.

Calculation
In this calculation we are using European standard as per instruction followed.
The sketch drawn on wheel face and projected on the wheel arch are section SA, SB, SC, SD & SE.

Table Analysis
Section Clearance measure (mm) Result
SA 9.9490 Fail
SB 10.0000 Pass
SC 0.1139 Fail
SD 2.8795 Fail
SE 5.9913 Fail
Conclusion
As per European regulation requirements the clearance at give point should be minimum 10mm. From the given model analyse and EU standard above details are given in the table as shown above .Here only the section SB passes the minimum clearance value and all other sections fails.
