Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM:

To calculate the wheel Arc area of fender and prove whether the car will pass the standards or Not by using the European standard.

FENDER:

Purpose of fender is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road dust particles thrown into the air by the rotating tire. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward the top of tire is rotating upward can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians. Fenders are typically rigid damage against road surface will provide safety.

JAPAN REQUIREMENT

  • Measure clearance L of the tire, hub, cap & fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
  • Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all the three positions.
  • Wheel guard requirement the value a shall be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rear ward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

US REQUIREMENT

  • Make clearance check details on all position from 100° to 100° & make the clearance check table.
  • All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulation.
  • The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30° forward and 50° rear ward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

EUROPEAN REQUIREMENT

  • Measure Length clearance at section A-B-C-D-E.
  • All the five section Length clearance value should greater than 10mm to satisfy European standard
  • Wheel guard requirement the value a shall be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rear ward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

WHEEL ARCH CALCULATION:

Drawing the sketch as per the European standards and regulations and projecting the sections on the fender to obtain the measurements for 'L' AND 'a'.

Measuring the values of clearance "L" at all sections:

At all five sections the value of 'L' should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulations.

SECTION SA: 9.9490 MM

SECTION SB: 10.0000 MM

SECTION SC: 0.113949 MM

SECTION SD: 2.8875 MM

SECTION SE: 5.9973 MM

TABULAR COLUMN:

S NO SECTION CLEARANCE 'L' in (MM) RESULT
1 A 9.9490 FAIL
2 B 10.0000 PASS
3 C - 0.11394 FAIL
4 D -2.8875 FAIL
5 E -5.9973 FAIL

Measuring the values of clearance "a" Wheel Guard requirement:

To satisfy the European requirements the value of 'a' should be more than 5mm at a line 30° forward and 50° rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel

Measuring the value of 'a' at line 30° forward from the central vertical axis of wheel: 45.8873 MM

Measuring the value of 'a' at line 50° forward from the central vertical axis of wheel: 38.6342 MM

OBSERVATION TABLE:

SECTION ANGLE CLEARANCE 'a' in (mm) RESULT
SB 30° 45.8873 PASS
SC 50° 38.6342 PASS

Conclusion:

The given model is analyzed according to the European Standards and from the above table it is clear that the fender does not pass the European standards at all sections except at section SB. So we need to suggest that the model should be sent to the styling team and they should modify the curvature of the fender in such a way that there should have a minimum clearance of 10 mm at point SA, SC, SD, SE..

Note: In case considering all region like JAPAN, USA, EUROPE, INDIA value of L greater in European standard 10MM will be follows to satisfy all the region.
