Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender Design of Car

Aim: Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard

Introduction to Fender: A fender is a semi-circular Arch type curved sheet metal structure which is used to prevent the entry of sand, mud, stones and another particle inside the engine compartment.

Important parts in Fender design:

  • Wheel Arch
  • Drip Area
  • Baffle and ORVM mounted Area
  • FRONTAL CRASH regulation and requirements

European Standard for Fender design:

According to European Union, the clearance size L should equal a minimum of 10 mm at every section(OA, OB, OC, OD, OE).

Results during checking of wheel arc gap :

  • Clearance for Section OB (L) = 10 mm.

  • Clearance for Section OA (L) = 9.9489mm.

  • Clearance for Section OC (L) = 0.1137 mm in the inside direction means the wheel is going outside of the fender

  • Clearance for Section OD (L) = 2.8787 mm in the inside direction means the wheel is going outside of the fender

  • Clearance for Section OE (L) = 5.9755 mm in the inside direction means the wheel is going outside of the fender

Comparing the above Observation and checking whether the car passes the European standard or not:

SECTION

MIN REQUIRED CLEARANCE (EU STD) IN MM (WHEEL ARCH GAP)

ACTUAL CLEARANCE IN MM (WHEEL ARCH GAP) STATUS
OA-OA 10 9.9489 FAILED
OB-OB 10 10 PASS
OC-OC 10 -0.1137 FAILED
OD-OD 10 -2.8787 FAILED
OE-OE 10 -5.9755 FAILED

Conclusion: According to the upper observation table, the fender is not passed the required clearance dimension of the Wheel Arch Gap which can fulfil the European standard need which should be a minimum of 10 mm. So this Fender is worthless.
