Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Wheel Arch Calculation Using NX CAD
- The wheelarch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. It should be placed and design in such a way that it could protect Engine Compartment, Pedestrian from the splashing of water, mud & stones etc.…
- The Wheel arch design must be fulfilled all the Regulatory & Standard requirement in the different country
- There are different standard for clearance between the fender and the wheel in different country
- Japan Standard
- European Standard
- American Standard
.
Aim/Objectives: The Main objective here to calculate/measure the wheel arch area & to prove that if this will qualify the European standard or Not.

European Standard For wheel Arch:

Note:
- The Clearance “L” Shown in the figure at all five Section SA, SB, SC, SD & SE the value must be Greater then 10 mm
- The distance “a” between Tire and fender must be greater than 5 mm

B. Obtaining the Distance between Fender & Tire “a”

Vertical Distance “a” b/w tire and fender is 32.3737 mm which is greater than 5 mm
C. Obtaining the wheel arch area of the given fender

- Wheel Arch Area = 2452 mm
- Arch Radius = 6048 mm
Conclusion: After the calculation of Clearance “L” & Distance “a” from the above wheel arch we can conclude the result that it will not qualified the European Standard for wheel arch area. So suggestion for the styling team to modify the surface of curvature of fender also modify the Clearance value “L” such that it can be greater than and equal to 10mm by increasing the curvature to outwards
