Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
1.AIM:
The objective of the fender wheel arch area challenge is to calculate & prove whether the given car fender will pass the European standards are not.
2. WHEEL ARCH AREA:
- Wheel arch area is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of vehicle.
- The design of wheel arch area should protect both Engine compartment & pedestrians from chipping of stones, water, mud.
- The design of wheel arch areas uses permits in different countries according to their standards.
3. EUROPEAN STANDARDS FOR WHEEL ARCH:

As per European standards the clearance of 'L' should be more than and equals to 10mm in specific points.
Named as SB, SA, SC, SD & SE.
4.DESIGN PROCEDURE:
Software used - Simens NX 12
Measuring clearance 'L' in mm:
At point SA: 9.9490 < 10 mm

At point SB: 10=10 mm

At point SC: -0.1139<10 mm

At point SD: -3.893<10 mm

At point SE: -8.267<10 mm

Table of Clearance 'L' in mm:
| Sections | Clearance 'L' in mm | Comments |
| SA | 9.9490 | OK |
| SB | 10 | PASS |
| SC | -0.1139 | FAIL |
| SD | -3.893 | FAIL |
| SE | -8.267 | FAIL |
From above table the values generated for SC, SD & SE are failed.
5.CONCLUSION:
From the above results obtained, we conclude that the given fender doesn't pass the European standards of fender wheel arch area.
Hence have to inform for Styling team to modify the styling surface of the fender in SC, SD & SE points by increasing the curvature at those sections towards outside.
